Independent Oil Testing

Notice how each of these oils say they protect against rust.
Gee, I've been unable to sleep at night worrying about the inside of my engine rusting.
Maybe if I were to put some oil in my engine it won't rust from the inside. ANY fricking oil could do that.
I am amazed at the claims many of the oil companies make. Many of these claims are hollow: "Specially formulated for older engines" "Specially formulated for high performance engines" Specially formulated for high mileage engines"
If it is specially formulated to be slippery it should work on any of the above engines. The oil companies very well may be thinking about high mileage engines when they make the oil but it is impossible for a consumer group to disprove one of the above claims.
There are a lot of important qualities in oil such as the weight. Heavy weight oils are good for engines that run hot such as racing engines.
I just get oil from a reputable company such as Valvoline but I think the most important thing to remember is to change your oil often. Sure they make synthetic oil that are advertised to run for 10,000 miles without breaking down but they still get dirty.

I'm in the oil business. The only thing that is important is the API starburst and making sure it has the latest rating, which is SM. All the different blends and concotions including synthetic are measured to this same standard. There isnt a different standard for high mileage, semi-syn, full syn etc. As for the name brand, if it makes you feel good because of their marketing, go ahead and buy it. Just realize that many name brands (Valvoline included) are nothing more than blender/packagers. They dont make the oil. They just mix the ad pac they buy with lube stock they buy, put it in a pretty bottle and advertise. The reality is that what goes bad in oil isnt the oi lmolecule (which never breakes down) it is the ad pac. So the more "extras" that are in it, the it will last. Dont mistake what I'm saying. All API certified oils will last for what the manufacture suggest for mileage intervals for any given gasoline vehicle. Also, todays oils are much higher quality than what was ever put in as factory fill.

My suggestion is to buy a conventional (no high mileage, old engine, semi or full syn)oil in the weight Jeep recomends for your year/engine, just make sure the product has the API starburst and carries the SM standard. You will know you are buying the latest quality product.
