In a gear reduction starter there is a planetary gear drive set in the starter nose cone. Older stock CJ’s have a Ford style direct drive, this style requires 500 to 800 amps to start the engine and the start rpm is between 300 and 500 rpm. A gear reduction starter will start the engine at 500 to 800 rpm and will only need 200 to 400 amps to do it. Its easier on your battery, engine, and cables. As of 10 years ago 50% of all vehicles sold new had a gear reduction starter standard, today there is not one vehicle sold in the world without one, well a real vehicle anyway. The fact is it’s a better way to go.

I am going to convert my starter to gear reduction before the end of the year, I don’t get many calls for older Jeep starters so I don’t stock the parts to build it, if you are interested in purchasing one let me know, after I see how many people are interested I will see what kind of volume discount I can get on the parts.

In my completely non-biased opinion we build the wolds strongest and best performing starters, and we don’t paint them an ugly green color or put our stickers all over them.

Sounds very interesting, and I would be interested when I get to that stage. I need to rewire & do pretty much a light rebuild before I start upgrading parts on my engine.
Good luck with your starter & keep us informed as to the updates & cost.

Rushpowersystems what kind of price are you talking for a GR starter for a 74 with AMC 304 V8?

Basically you have 2 options, most of the catalogs only focus on the 2.0 KW which they sale for $300 to $450. They do this “one size fits all” because it is less sku numbers to deal with and the 1.2 KW and 2.0 KW are interchangeable.

If you are running a 6 or 8 cly with 9:1 and lower compression, and if the engine is in good condition with good compression and no timing issues a 1.2 KW is just fine. However if you are running higher compression then the 2.0 is the way to go.

My normal everyday price is $330.00 for the 2.0 and $225.00 for the 1.2 KW, the price includes shipping in the US. One challenge for me is I don’t operate on that high of a mark up, I make no bones about the fact that I am one of the most, if not the most, expensive custom auto-electrical companies out there. The difference is I use all new parts of the highest quality I can find, it costs me more to build a unit so they are more expensive on the other end. Having said that I would love to place a volume order and shave 20 to 30% off the price, I figure I would need at least 3 people to get the 1st discount from my vender.

I'd get a 2.0KW - Going to need a new starter for the 401 and I was going to get a gear reduction starter anyway... :)
