I had a standard muffler on and wanted a little rumble. I installed a Magnaflow and it is just as silent as my OEM muffler! I am using the stock pipes so woudl changeing the tailpipe to 2.5 inch make a it so that I can hear it?

What about the cat., I hope by now you do not still have the oem version, but a straight thru type. If you even have one.

Nope, i have the cat on oem type. I have to have one since we have emissions testing.

If you have the newer style straight through cat, and a magnaflow, I would think you should notice the difference. I went to the next size up pipe which was about I could do to fit on the oem exaust manifold, plus a new cat and aftermarket muffler. I did notice a bit of difference in sound which was enough for me.

Torxhead is right about the cat. The catalytic converters from the early '80s really robbed power and they clog up. They were made with a honeycomb pattern and air had to go through tiny holes. If you buy a replacement cat it will be a newer style that would not rob power (within reason) and won't clog up. Please do an accurate check of gas mileage before and after replacing the cat. I'd like to see the difference.:D

Ok, so changing the cat, and widening the pipe shoudl help? What brand of cat should I get?

Do you have any sound clips of your magnaflow with high flow cat?

Pretty sure magnaflow is still a straight through muffler. Unless you have some cubes/cam you won't get that classic "rumble". That comes from chambered muffs.

Dumping/changing the cat should help though.

I also experienced the same issue. I have the stock cat as well. I put on a Cherry Bomb muffler and it is still quiet. Any of you guys have recommendations for aftermarket cats?

Looks like Magnaflow would be a good choice out of these:

So, if I changed to a flowmaster 40, would it be more more rumble like?

Absolutely. Its not going to have that classic V8 sound but it'll sound aggressive and you'll feel it in the seat.

I changed to flowmaster and it is louder but need to get a high flow cat and it miight make it perfect.

Im thinking of putting headers on mine. I'm trying to find somewhere to take the cat off for me. Have 50 series flows on it right now but l want a little bit more rumble.

Any update on how things turned out? The sound better with the hi flow cats?

I am picking up a Hedman header tomorrow. I have a flowmaster on there now. My cat is shot. Rattles on the inside. I am wondering if I should just replaced it with a piece of pipe when I put the header on. I was debating a hi-flow cat, but that adds a lot more money to the project.

The flow through catalytic converters are the honeycomb style. The holes are square though, and referred to as bricks. Each brick being a couple inches thick, so there are multiple bricks in a catalytic converter.

The early converters were of the bead type. The catalyst was coated onto beads, the converter filled with beads in which the exhaust had to flow around. If you still have the bead type, identified by the plug in the bottom that alloys one to empty and refill the converter, then the muffler isn't doing much in the way of noise control.

I changed my tail pipe to 2.5 inches and did the Flowmaster 50 but the sound is not that much different. I was told that I need to make the diameter form the manifold all 2.5 inches for more sound. I found out that the high flow will not make that much of a different but who knows.
