TCase Transfer case sound
Hello everyone! 1st post since just getting the father in-laws 78 CJ7 Renegade , so please bear with me. It has a issue with the Transfer Case that gets bound up when trying to get it out of 4 hi/lo. it has a noise that sounds like 2 gears are rubbing together. Just kinda like barely trying to engage even when you are not trying to put it in 4 hi/lo. It goes in good but, hard to get out, even when rocking it forward/reverse, going or stopped. The strange thing is it does this sound most of the time when just driving around but, sometimes it stops for a few minutes but, starts back. Not a crazy loud or grinding sound. Just like something is wore out and letting a gear rub on another. Also, I have looked at rebuild kits for this thing that has bearings, shims, etc for around $300. I'm pretty much mechanical but, not to sure about rebuilding this thing. Probably could do it but, not to sure about special tools required. I know there's not much to them parts wise but. This thing also needs the clutch/brake pedal assembly rebuilt. The clutch pedal has no bronze bushing or roller bearing as I have seen some have left in the housing. I guess I'm just gonna have to take it apart to see which one it takes. Know this was long but, I have no friends that know anything about jeeps and the pa in-law does'nt know nothing about thing like this, even though he had this thing for close to 35yrs (all original) beside front seats. Have found rebuild info on-line but, I thought I would reach out to someone on here. THANK YOU!!!
