Ok so I know my intake and exhaust manifold have gone through a lot of heat cycles but how do I get the bolts to line up after it's been removed? My intake manifold actually cracked luckily I have another and its partner exhaust manifold. What's the tricks you guys use?

You need to get the bolts started before installing it on the motor and then tighten everything up.

I got it but there was no way I was getting all the bolts started. When I took the manifold off the other engine while removing the last bolt I felt the manifold release tension like a spring. I had 3 to 4 bolts that wouldn't line up no matter how hard I tried. I used studs for the 4 that gave me problems applying persuasion with a 3lb hammer till I got everything lined up. It was a bear. If my brother wouldn't have been here I would've given up but he stuck it out so I had to suck it up.

This is why I like the new style so much better. And why they made the change.

This is the newer style 83 and up. I'll take some pics and explain everything better tomorrow in my build thread.

I know this thread is a few months old, but would like to expand on installing exhaust manifolds on a 6cyl engine.

Jeep put out a service tech letter concerning 2 center holes on the exhaust manifold that do not line up with the cylinder head holes. The fix back then was to enlarge the holes (in EM) with a 29/64" drill bit.

Hope this helps

Interesting that the manufacturer would put out something like that. I would be concerned about the port alignment.

Pete, I must have missed this when it was first posted. Would love to see a picture of what your talking about. What is the difference between the old style and the new style. When I rebuilt mine, I had no problems with alignment. See my build thread for a picture.

Hmm. Did I bring it up in my build thread? I'll have to go take a look.
