Is this a mistake or is it "Painless"

Is this a mistake or is it "Painless"
You are right I'm sort of sorry I mentioned my personal problems, those come and go with the wind. The Doc says I'm healthy enough to keep going and the daughter ... well she does her best...

Thanks for the wiring advice. The CJ's wiring is now to point where I can't drive the jeep safely. Flashing head lights and burning fuses for the brake lights. It's time to start. Right now I've become familiar with the wiring harness. No wonder that thing is so expensive. A game plan is being worked out on the proper way to follow through. One thing did surprise me though. The Painless instructions say that there is no ground wire and I need to take care of that myself. Good enough, I will, but for $500 you'd think ground wires would be included. Also, even though most of my loom covers have been replaced new looms will have to be purchased.

A magnifying glass will most certainly be needed to read the tiny wiring printing. So far the colors have been true for what I'm familiar with. Since my CJ wiring is VERY simple there definitely are wires under the hood to cull out. No resister, no computer, no emissions to fool with. There are a few extras though, winch, OBA switch, trail lights and their inevitable relay's.

One thing that is slowing me down is my dash. Sitting on the bench is a completely new set of gauges, their sending units and special lighting unit alone with a digital unit for the speedometer. All that needs to be considered. Oh yeah, I guess the stock light switch is supposed to go in favor of a GM light switch. It will look the same but has different guts along with a switch dome light circuit for an additional map light on the dash. That will be nice. ...... So much to do it's daunting, but I'm old enough to know that taking it one circuit at a time will make it easy enough.

HH-Check for sharp edges on the steering colume brace behind the dash panel. where the harness will lay.
It can scrap off insulation quickly on bouncy type dirt roads and short out all of your hard work.
I sleeved mine in old 1 3/4" dia, 12" section of fire hose. I have also used an old radiator hose for this.

Nice. Those domed lens covers look very cool indeed. I went the quick cheap route with flat gauge lenses. There was nothing cheap about the gauges though. I'm looking forward to having nice bright accurate programmable fuel and speedometer gauges. Now to finally finish my pop out & removable gauge panel dash.

Edit: Lumpy, I imaging the problem is exactly there, possibly a pinched wire in the pedal swing area. Originally the wires were all nicely taped and bundled safely. But as it ended up there were on and off connections that ended up being an old tired fuse box, but the search made a tangled mess out of my nice clean wiring bundle with lots of opportunity for a pinch.

JR74CJ5;224697 - I 'pre-wired" most of the dash gauge stuff and I also did the GM style light switch etc. [url said:

That was a great idea! It would be awesome to have male & female plug associated with the dash wiring so you could simply unplug the dash and remove it completely out of the way.

You can bet I'll have my dash completely removed for the wiring. The new dash I'm working on has a removable instrument cluster plate with aircraft fittings. Most of it is actually done. I screwed up when welding some holes closed and warped the drivers side beyond repair. Well, it's repaired with an excessive amount of filler needed to make a nice flat surface. In the bumps and twists a CJ goes through it will crack and fall off. To get around it I've got another dash to cut and weld on. The real solution is to have a custom dash fabricated with the features this one has.

You could heat and beat it back flat perhaps and skin it like I did with a scrap piece of stainless steel or sheet metal to paint...

Welding on that is difficult, that's why I skinned with fresh so no real hole repairs

Tried several methods to straighten the warp, including shrinking the metal with heat. It did get better, but not good enough to prevent excessive amounts of bondo to make things straight.

This week end I cut both dashes and welded the parts together to make one complete dash with a decent level of success. Now to paint the it. I did consider having it wrapped in a carbon fiber pattern wrap. It would have that high tech look modern hot rod guys love.

Saw a CJ dash in CF. Thought it looked great.
