Jeep Flakes and Craigslist
Two old sayings come to mind
Money talks and bull:censored: walks
You snooze you loose

It helps to be a good navigator to fair well on CL, and sometime you find stuff folks are willing to give away for next to nothing.

I found an old (1941) Desmond – Stephan Simplex vise. Beefy!

I don't know about everybody else's experiences, but good Jeeps in my area sell so fast that there's no choice but to deal with whatever kind of seller you get. I've dealt with all kinds on Craigslist, but for the most part, the Jeep guys are a good bunch.

With respect to the speed at which a good, solid CJ sells here in southeast Michigan, here's the story from my last acquisition: I called the seller the night he posted the Jeep and arranged to come see it the next evening. The day I was supposed to see the Jeep, I got a call from the seller around lunch time saying that a guy had left a deposit on the Jeep for full price, but that he had to get approval of the purchase from his wife. A couple of hours later, I get a call informing me that the wife did not approve the purchase and that I could come take a look at the Jeep. At this point I was celebrating because I knew this was a good Jeep and they're so hard to come by; I ended up taking it home with me. The guy wasn't so much flakey as clueless, but because they're not making CJs anymore, I'm willing to deal with whoever can sign a title over to me.

WOW that looks awesome. If you put that much time and effort into a vise I can only imagine what your Jeep will look like when done.

That's was my first thought too.

Thanks for the kind words.

I appreciate hearing about your experiences, rufus.

I do view the shopping expeditions as adventures, but If the advertiser won't answer my messages it's impossible to set up a meeting. Also, I'd feel pretty stupid to drive for a few hours to find out that there's no title or that the owner wants $11,000 for a Jeep that's worth $1,500.

i know those are frustrating, ive been conned into looking at some of those myself, but man after its over and youre looking back on it at times like this those are the most hilarious, its like youve been a part of those crazy cl adds we all shake our heads at now and then. :chug:

On the Vice ...... First thought, nice work ...... second thought, whow that blue really pops ...... Third thought, I hope that's at least AMC blue. Great job on the lettering, it looks like something from one of those restoration shows.

Thanks,
IIRC it was ford blue.

However, I did paint this old (60s) Wyanne compressor AMC blue.

A guy drop this off at my place after it was sitting outside in the weather for 7 years (too tall for his under house garage).

So obviously everything you touch turns to gold. :notworthy:

I'd probably be considered a flake. I call/text people about jeeps I see online all the time to ask them questions about it when I have no real intention to buy it all the time:dung: sometimes I also make low ball offers I know they will turn down just to be a turd. I guess if someone was like ok one day I probably would actually buy the jeep.

If you don't ask, they can't say no.

Posi, very nice work on the vise and compressor. Some years ago, nothing made me much happier than taking an old piece of :dung: and making it look like new...and again, nice work! :chug:

Thanks guys,

I apologize for steering this thread offtrack a bit, the vise was a CL buy, the compressor was not.

To POSI and the rest, nice to see something well done on these stormy March days. The negative comments that myself and others have expressed
in regard to C/L have served there purpose.Time to move on.As Posi has shown a compressor and glass bead cabinet and some paint and a little dedication can go a long way on fixing old into new again. We need to start a thread about these little jewels. Mike:)III:)

you know, it really burns my buns every time I read rare in the title of CL adds.

Most of the time that is code for i have a heap of rust and I am not going to budge on my ridiculous price.

Further more it really heats me up when I see that on a wagoneer sale (probably my fav jeep model) The SJ wagoneer was made from 63 to 91. Thats almost 30 years, how rare can they be.

It continues...

SCENE: Standing on the porch, semi disassembled motorbikes leaning against the walls, dog barking in the house.

On the cell phone:

Me:
Hi, we had arrangements for you to show me your jeep at 9:00?
I'm on the porch, it's 9:05, I'm knocking and the dog's barking and there's no answer at the door.

Him:
Oh, yeah, well I'm not home now, and my brother's definitely asleep, so stop knocking.

Thats ok because my double barrel just opened your door! Im taking your jeep for a test drive , if I like it your $ will be in mailbox, if I dont there will be no $. Either way Im keeping your jeep. Thanks and have a bad day buddy.

That would have to suck big time. Sorry to hear you have to deal with tools such as that person.
