1976 Jeep CJ 5 I know the motor is a 258 straight 6 presume rest is stock and its beat. (didn't just use a branch)
Not sure I am in the right place. My leep 76 CJ5 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l carter yf no dashpot control will run fine for a couple of miles then slowly slow down till stop will idle but weak no power. Turn off and set 5 mins start drive off but can't atttain speed slow down stop start over longer wait between stops more power upon start up any idea this started all of a sudden .

:)Is there any Black smoke? Check the choke on the carb. make sure the butterfly is wide open when hot.........in fact next time it does it pull the air cleaner and look.......
or is your gas tank still vented? may be pulling a vacuum in fuel line starving the motor for fuel. loosen the gas cap and see if that helps. Fuel filter check or replace.

:D:D:D:D

My 74 did that and discovered the fuel filter (I had 2) needed to be replaced Changed them both and it would zip up to 90 MPH post haste.
CJ5s are very spooky at that speed., not recommended! :D

Definitely sounds like a fuel issue. If the filters don't fix the issue, replace the fuel pump. Most are fairly easy to replace.

What he says. Id start here and see what you get.

definitely change fuel filter (filters) than test fuel pump for pressure and volume. Check manual for required pressure and volume. This is a easy test
and you will know if the problem was the pump.By all means replace if it is
not a hardship or has been in use for some time even if it tests OK.
Insurance plan. After that you can check all the other things mentioned that could cause fuel problems. mike s.
