jeep tailgate question

My CJ7 tail gate drops down to an angle when i put the tailgate down. It is not like my truck tailgate that sits level so you can sit on it. I ordered a new set of tailgate cable's but they are just as long as the ones on there. Is this normal from the factory?

No, I still have the oem ones on my '86 and the tailgate sits level when opened.

Thats interesting, Torx....It's been quite some time since I've had the tailgate down on mine, but I seem to remember that mine drops down below level, too. I just figured that's how it was.

My '84 sits level.

I cant remember any of mine not being level. 79 , 80 , 81, 82, 83, and '85.

My 86 sits level, if anything a tad up.

are your cables mounted in the correct locations

just ran into that issue while reassembling my jeep . This is gonna sound strange but the hinges can be installed upside down. Witch results in the cables being too long ,and the gate hangs low or angles down. If you look at the hinge the pivot point is not in the middle of the hinge. hope that helps.

What bigwrench said. The first set of hinges i ever installed I put on upside down. The long side of the hinge goes up. Short side down.
