Planning a trip later this year that will require carrying extra fuel (10 gal minimum, preferably 15). Will be traveling some very rough back country roads, but not rock-crawling. I'm not real fond of the idea of carrying jerry cans of fuel inside the tub, and am looking for ideas/suggestions on carriers. The Jeep is a '81 CJ7 with a body mounted swing away tire carrier. I've spent a couple hours surfing, but haven't found anything that looked like it would work/fit without some real high dollar mods. Hoping some of you may have been down this road and have some suggestions.
 
I have a homebuilt setup on mine. Have been offroad a number of times, including scraping this across a few trees.

Here is my tire carrier/ can holder. it takes two 5 gal cans and mounts to the body rather than the frame, I put it on about 20 years ago and it has done no noticeable damage to the body. I am sorry I have it off , It's kind of hard to appreciate it like it is. you have a good point about carrying fuel, it is kind of difficult to find a good place to keep it and harder to secure it. It is also a PITA to transfer it to the tank from the can. I used a Oklahoma credit card but even then you have a smelly hose you have to keep some place reasonably clean.
Jerry cans are not the easiest cans to pour from and 77 CJ5 's are not the easiest filler necks to put fuel in, even from a pump they can require some fineness. I have been thinking about the way boat tanks work and hoses with connectors that stay clean and you don't have to deal with too much gas smell because both ends are valved. sorry, just a little free association.:cool:
something else that I would like is a system that uses the gas in the cans first. It seems it would be good to be rid or the possible liability as soon as possible and then have the main tank full in case you crunched your cans.
Don't forget the water!!

I would suggest you check and see what is available for cans before building a rack. I have not looked full contact but what "jerry cans" I have seen recently are not quite like the ones of my youth.

Thanks for the ideas. Yup, Big Bend is the plan. My son just finished a lift on his Cherokee and is antsy to get it out there too. He has the same problem with carrying extra fuel, i.e. doesn't want jerry cans inside. He has a roof rack, but that's awful high to lift a full can, and low limbs would be a hazard. Neither of us is sold on the jerry can option. On the CJ, the filler is tucked under a taillight, and would be a real pain to pour into. I have visions of a boot full of gasoline. And, which kind of can - steel which most write ups say are prone to develop leaks, or mil spec poly which would probably be prone to puncture? I think what I would prefer would be a 15-20 gallon auxiliary tank, flat, which could be mounted in the back of the tub and plumbed into either the main tank or fuel line. That would seem to be more of a long-term solution.
 
Ken, Mine is a military steel Jerry can. Son carries one on his YJ as well. We cleaned them up and made sure they were rust free, then painted them. Keep them maintained so they don't rot out.

For pouring, we both carry the old military screw in spout. This is a flexable 12" steel hose that screws into the top of the can with a rubber O-ring to seal it.

Son has one that is a smaller diameter for Unleaded filler spouts. Both work well, and we have had no problems.

IOPort51 has a nice setup as well. I like that style, but wanted something on mine that didn't require opening the swingout to get to the can. Plus, it was a add on modification of my existing set up.
 
I've thought about this also. My so-called solution right now is a pair of fiberglass early CJ under-seat tanks I obtained (or maybe just 1). Just like the old-style jeeps, it will fill from the sides, but the main tank will still be in use also. Should be able to get about 12-15 extra gallons usable fuel.

Other than that here is a pic of what my Cj had when I bought it...

It just mounts to the tool rack and swings with it. It could be modified for another tank if needed, but that getting pretty heavy for the mounts the way they are made.
 
I have a tire mount with two jerry cans similar to the one above. It's an older aftermarket carrier, but still in good shape. I got mine off Craigs List a year ago from a guy in Wisconsin. I carry a funel but it's a two person job. If you search they are out there.
 
I built a swing out tire carrier that allows the tire that allows two positions for the tire to ride. I can slide it in close to the Jeep, or slide it out giving room for 2 jerry cans to be mounted behind the tire. I also have a spare spindle front hub, brake rootor, and lock-out as the mount for the tire.

Appreciate the suggestions. Looking at a set up made by Body Armor right now. It's a bumper (which I don't have now) and a bumper mount swing out. The bumper has two spots for recovery attachment, plus a 2" receiver for a third, which could come in handy. Says it will carry two jerry cans, a hi-lift jack mount, and the spare can be mounted inboard when not carrying cans. The whole package is about $627 plus tax, no freight pick up at store. Found it at 4WD.com (duh, search and look through about ten pages). Anyone have any pros/cons about Body Armor products?

This is part number BA5292? You are saying the cans are inboard? I don't see that happening unless your bumper is 10" away from the rear cross member, that is really going to do a job on your departure angle. If the cans are out board it is going to make the boom that the tire hangs from about 20 inches long. Even with a knee brace, that’s quite a cantilever for a 40 or 50 pound tire over rough terrain. I think I would want to see some more angles on this one.
I do like the idea of carrying the tire inboard when you don’t have the cans on board, that is a good idea. :cool:

"Rock Hard Parts" makes a tire carrier that's rated up to 40" rubber & a "Hilift".
It has a optional setup for 2 "Jerry Cans".

Well, I did the math and bit the bullet. Morris charges freight but not sales tax (out of state). 4WD has to charge sales tax, plus they put on a surcharge for oversize shipment (the free freight for in store pick up isn't entirely free). With the 10% discount (Thanks CJ), Morris came in at $664.97 compared to $681.43 from 4WD. Morris gets the order. The $16.47 savings is nice, and I don't have to make a 2 hour round trip to pick it up.
 
Hey! IOPort51 the pics of the jerry can carrier you posted look like a dutch military tire and fuel carrier that swings to the drivers side instead of the AMC tire carrier that swings to the passenger side, if you still have that carrier where did you get it or would you like to sell yours?
