Oops! Meant SM420 above...

Pete what was the deciding factor for you one the 465 vs the 420?

420 has slightly lower 1st gear ratio...

60:1 or 90:1 sounds like a no brainer to me, Dana 300 all the way.;)

:D:D

Looks like I may have accidentally fudged those numbers a bit... I thought stock Dana 300 low was 3:1... it's 2.62:1

with SM420 Dana 20 and 4.27 diffs = 60:1
with SM420 Dana 300 and 4.27 diffs = 78:1

I can as as tarry pointed out do the 18/20 combo to get close to stock Dana 300 , but if spending money on a terra low kit is an option I can make that Dana 300 4:1 low and increase to a whopping 120:1 ... maybe a little too far for me... :D:D

Its in good shape and $200. :) Do you have 4.27s already?

Alright... I've decided! Unless I find a sweet deal like Pete! :D:D

Keeping the AMC 304 for this stage of build. May do a rebuild of it.

Adapting the SM420 to the AMC 304 .

Adapting the Dana 300 to the SM420.

This will allow clocking of the Dana 300 to get it tucked up, a lower initial crawl range stock, and still allow for further upgrading of crawl ratio at a later date if desired (tera low kit)

Now I need to find a few deals on some of this stuff... though the peace of mind of buying these things turn-key from novak is appealing...

Well that'll get ya every time!

:D:D

From what Im looking at on your build you will want to pay attention to the length of your drivetrain and the amount of flexability you build into it. The shorter the better , but theres a little room to fudge. Your in a little tougher spot than I am cause the CJ7 gives me a little more room.

Ive decided to throw most of my cash toward the Transmission and Transfer Case . Thats where Im going to get the majority of my crawl ratio from. Keep plugging numbers in and compare them on that calculator. Write down the different combos and go check the cost factor. Then you will see what you have left for all the :dung: you forgot. :D

Sending a pm. Dont call Novak just yet. ;)

Good point on lengths... I have some thinking to do on that...

My current set up (without measuring, from novaks site) is:

T-15 = 10"
Dana 20 = 10.5"

Obviously bell housing and tail housing on Transfer Case not included...

SM420 is more expensive than the SM465, BUT it has a 1.3" advantage on length... It measures 10.7" vs 12". And is only increasing my length by .7 so far...

The Dana 20 and earlier 300's look to both be 10.5"

With the adapter for the Dana 20 the combined (adapter and tranny) length is 15.2"

With the adapter for the Dana 300 the combined length is 13.9"

+10.5" for the Transfer Case itself = 23.9" vs 20.5" ... 3.4" longer than it was originally...

I have a CV driveshaft, and modification is possible... hoping the angles wont be too screwed... But after my lift I was going to need to cut and re-weld the spring perches again anyways for the angle...

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Don't forget what clocking is going to do to the angles.
After clocking mine (in a 7) the rear angle is pretty steep.

I'll have to check this out...

The adapter will come with 3 possible clocking ranges if I'm reading novaks info correctly...

Heres some help spending all that money you have saved. :) Cheapest I found so far. Add it to the cart for the real price. Im going with the novak kit for the Dana 300 that uses the Transfer Case adapter and a new input shaft. I figured this would be as good a time as any to add the 4 to 1 kit.

This is the one and only time I ever wished I had a SR4 , T-4 or T-5 Transmission . I need that bell housing and the driveshafts are supposed to work as well.

Since everything I have is different from yours, here's a little info that might help.
My engine/Transmission /Transfer Case sets level,(the diff. is angled up of course) I clocked my t/c 6* by redrilling my novac adapter. The lowest point is now app. 1" below the bottom of the frame. My cv driveshft is 21" from center to center of the two u-joints. My driveshaft angle is 21* with the tires sitting on the ground.
I can drive down the road without any vibration but with the rear jacked up the cv joint is real close to binding up. (not sure of the angle with both tires off the ground)

Mmmmm. Thats what Im talking about. Im hoping to do everything Transmission / Transfer Case related all at one shot. Id love to get mine tucked up there and make up a new skid as well.

Pete, I'm not sure which 4:1 your looking at but I've heard that the low-max is the best. JB Conversions, Inc.

That was eye opening. I was going with the Tera flex 4 to 1 cause thats what the Quadratec , 4wd hardware catalogs had in there. Thats a great comparison they came up with. Im sold. Thankfully I havent ordered up anything yet.

JR, I keep wanting to jump in here and say I think you are going overboard but then I remember you have the Rubicon in your back yard and then I am thinking "let it off the chain!!".

I hope there is a tube frame in the works for this package. Your gonna redefine "stress crack" with all these new gears and the new territory you will be able to travel.

I always wonder why people shy away from the low gearing.

With my SM465 , Dana 300 4 to 1 conversion and 3.54 gears I can push my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l to 5000 rpms and be doing 139 mph. ;)

the only place this is going to work is an alternate universe.
