Jumper cables...

Jumper cables...
I have a set of heavy 15 foot cables that will hold a welding electrode if need, the battery has more that enough amperage to burn a 3/16 arc rod for crude but effective trail repairs. Or even just fixing something around the place.

You do this with one battery? I was wanting to get something set up but I thought you had to have two batteries to get enough.

I'll throw my 2 cents in. For those that have on-board welders, it makes little sense to carry both jumpers and welding cables. I set up an extra set of jacks next to the welder that are directly connected to the battery and then put a Tweco quick connect to exchange the electrode holder for a battery clamp. End result: a set of 25' really heavy duty jumpers.

I have used one, I think it is 750 amp but I will have to check. Just size the rod to the available power. Never plan anything you can not do alone and I don't carry two batteries.

And disconnect the positive from the alternator when you do this.:D

Nice on board welder/power supply.:notworthy:

You've never been zapped by a spark plug wire? Shocking...

For the old people: We all know what it feels like when your brother or buddy zaps you with a crank telephone....

True. I've never been zapped by a spark plug wire.

I guess I've been extremely lucky, or I was taught good habits so early in life, I don't recognize habitual good habits as precautions.

In ancient times when men were men and timing lights were made of cast aluminum it would be a man tribe lesson to be allowed to disconnect the battery lead before removing the plug wire clamp and/or turning the engine off. On this, usually one, occasion when the number one plug fired there was an induced charge that found its way to ground through your favorite body. It was a question of how many times this happened before you dropped the light or re attached the battery clamp that would be discussed for some time to come by the other members of your tribe.:laugh::laugh::laugh:

There's an old saying, "It isn't the voltage that gets you , it's the amperage."

This is why stun guns and Tasers are non-lethal I(high voltage, low amperage), or so I've been told. ⚡

I'm learning a lot about my brain from this thread.

For decades I've known that amperage is the danger. I've also known that static electric shocks have nearly no amps but a lot of volts.

The odd thing is that my brain has never put it all together until now: an automotive battery has deadly electrical properties in spite of the fact that I know car batteries provide hundreds of amps.

It never would have occurred to me that I could power punch a small hole in an engine block with battery power. I always figured that car batteries were bludgeoning weapons of opportunity, not electric weapons of opportunity.

I think I better understand the reasons I achieved the lowest SAT scores in the history of my school district: I have unusual warps in my brain.

Me Too. . Already familiar w/ properties & structure of electrons, magnetism, dipole theories, etc. - who knew, that's all electricity is!

I'm a little late jumping in here, but, I like mine to be long enough to reach the jeep behind or in front of me. Comes in handy on the trail when you can't get turned head to head or beside someone.

A wheeler I know put remote terminals of 1/0 wire near the rear of his 4x4 for just such occasions.

Suz - you are sort of amazing, now 4 pages of posts about ...... Jumper Cables ........ Amazing!

Great info.. Now, I don't just need a set of jumpers. Feeling ambitious; I want a portable welding rig ;-) Thanx guys!

Ya, no kidding. Never would have thought that checking out a jumper cable thread would steer me away from a rebuild and make me want a welding rig and 1/0 terminals on the back of my Jeep.

This site can be good and bad for my mental health.

A couple of reality check questions. Do either of you know how to weld? Has anybody in here actually needed a trail repair such as this? The only reason I have done this is because I wanted to know if I could.

J. B. Weld counts, right? Lol

That's funny.

And yes, know how to weld or wouldn't ask. Top of my class except with torch. Probably same reason I'm good with an airbrush and every other type of art.

Sorry, couldn't help myself. ✌

Yes. And yes.

Yes. And yes.

And who was this person? I would like to hear from him, can you invite him?

And good for you both, I was told that if I got a pace maker I would not be able to weld any more (that is bull) and I had to give that a great deal of thought as to if it were worth it.
