AMC 304 CJ7 possible problem

I just bought a 1976 CJ7 and I notice that it takes awhile to warm up. When I put it in gear and start to drive off it loses voltage it seems like and shuts off. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this before and if so what could the problem could be. Thanks everyone!

First welcome to the site. You will find out that there are a lot of guys on here that know the CJ's inside and out. I'm just in the learning the CJ's stage. I do know, that owning an old CJ, you're going to have to get into the tinker and repair mode. With the little information you gave, it could be a number of things, like a fuel problem with carb, filter, pump etc. Could be electrical. Old bad wiring and grounds are a problem also. Try to check some of these things out to narrow it down better, and these guys will be able to help you pin point the problem. Do searches on here, and you will probably find a thread on here that someone has had the same problem as you with answers and ideas on what to check. There are answers to every problem from bumper to bumper. :)

Thanks for the input. I'm just beginning the tinkering phase of my jeep. I have the original repair manual for it and I plan on digging through this forum for most troubleshooting needs.

Does it do this after it is up to operating temp.?

It feels like the engine isn't getting enough power from the battery to sustain gear shifting. Which to me seems like something with the alternator
