keep blowing ign fuse

hi,
im new to the jeep world and i went and looked at a jeep today i was thinking about buying but it keeps blowing the ign fuse im thinking about getting it but dont want to deal with a big headache. im not to familiar with jeeps as im pretty new to them. anyway the guy that owns it has replaced the ign coil new distributor,new brain box, the jeep runs for about 5 minutes and then blows the fuse and when you put a new fuse in it blows it right away on start, but if you let it sit for about 30 minutes and try to start it, it will start up and run for about another 5 minutes, just wondering what you guys think it could be, or if this is a common problem, i only looked at it for about 20 minutes and didnt see any wires grounding out, im possibly picking it up tommorow but would just like to have a heads up on what im getting into before i go get it.

Well the short answer would be, if you don't want a big headache or at least an occasional one don't buy this jeep. It is a CJ isn't it, what year? Before diving head first into this we really do need to know the year. On some CJ's the ignition system is relatively easy, on others it's still relatively simple with some quirks like a GM steering column. Several have than pesky fusible link that can cause problems.

I would think with some more detail, the problem could be solved. A CJ wiring system is not all that complex. This would probably reveal more issues though. So if you are looking for a turn key 30+ year old CJ, prepare to pay a bit more for it, or you can just buy someone else's problem. You could also learn a lot about it though, its pretty much your decision.

Generally I agree with the guys .

Would need to know more about jeep. Year model specs. Make sure they didnt put too small of a fuse in the ign fuse holder. But dont get too big either.. that would/could be worse..

If you have an ohm meter, that is helpful for many issues.

Could be that the po wired everything wrong when they installed the new parts, or put the wrong parts on the jeep. New parts can be faulty too.


Again, we would need to know more about the jeep to offer better advice.
