Yes I did search the but several of the links that everyone says are helpful must be old and unable to be viewed. So the prob is I bought an 84 CJ7 and now the owner can not find an ignition key. So i have been researching and did find some helpful info but still am not clear exactly what tools are needed to remove the steering wheel and whatever else has to come out. Bottom line, what do I need if I do not have a key to remove the cylinder.

I don't know how to change a lock cylinder without a key. Honestly, I would call a local locksmith and ask. Heck, the may be able to just make you a key without replace the lock cylinder.

It is easier with the key but still possible. The lock cylinder is held in place with this tab

First take off the horn. Be very careful and watch how you took the horn apart. We get people that have taken the horn apart and have trouble putting it back together. Things to take note of are the spring loaded contact. This allows the steering wheel to rotate and still give electricity to the horn. Another thing to keep in mind is the movable metal horn piece in the middle can't be grounded. The PO of my CJ used big washers to reinstall my horn and it caused the horn to always honk. So he disconnected the horn.

To do this job you need a steering wheel puller

and a lock plate compression tool

After you remove the turn signal you have the ability to remove the lock cylinder by pressing the tab on the cylinder. This is where it is nice to have the key. Rotating the key makes it easy to press on the tab. Without the key it takes a bit more force. Since you will be replacing the lock cylinder don't worry about breaking it.

Oh Wait! I just noticed you have a hard top. If you replace the ignition cylinder. The key for the door locks won't match.
Maybe you would want to try Elwood's idea and call a locksmith.

So far this is one of the best websites I have found. You guys rock. BusaDave9 your help is much appreciated and saved me a 195.00 locksmith call. When I got that quote I was ready to do some riggin' and have a push starter. I got it out and replaced it with a GM cylinder from Oreillys. My jeep didnt come with door keys either so thats not an issue. Again thanks for the quick replies. You guys were spot on.
