76 cj 7 originally a 304 auto, when I bought it.It now has 258 and a 4 speed....Dana 30,AMC 20 , Dana 300...2004 F-350..2005 Fatboy
Just bought more axles Dana 30 and 44 out of supposedly an 86 CJ7 and a Dana 300 for my CJ7 project (money pit). I thought they were wide trak, not! I hate being new and having to learn at times ,gets costly. now I have 3 sets of axles and 2 300 transfer cases. anyway the 44 has some sort of locker in it and I am trying to find out what it is. The sides opposite of where the pin goes through are flat. it has some orange springs ,i think 2. any ideas?:) i would post a picture if I knew how, sorry

Thanks

A picture would really help us here.

thanks but nope that's not it. I'll try to get pics up now.

Wow it worked.:chug:

It looks like a mini spool. The lack of outer couplers makes that obvious, but mini spools dont have springs.

At the same time, I dont know of a lunchbox locker that doesn't have outer couplers.

It's definitely not a full locker either...

Im stumped.

Edit: Im going with some drop in lunchbox locker with internal couplers that Im not familiar with...
:D

Sounds good to me. Im trying to find out if should stay or go with another lunch box type due to insufficient funds for now.

Are you thinking of replacing it with a different style? If it functions ok I would just run it. :chug:
But that's just my opinion. I've ran lunchbox lockers in my CJ for years now and have no complaints

I don't know for sure yet I really would like to know what it is and if it's worth a darn . If it's o.k. I can use that money for something else, like a front locker .

It's a lunch box locker but I don't know what one.
Lunch Box Lockers

Lunch Box Lockers (sometimes called Drop-In Lockers) are locking differentials that can be installed into an existing differential carrier. This type of design greatly simplifies installation. There is no need to worry about gear meshing or the adjustments that go into installing an entire differential. A Lunch box locker can easily be installed by a shade tree mechanic. The disadvantage is the carrier is now the weak link. The carrier may have been strong enough for an open differential but a locker experiences higher forces and may fail after a lunch box locker has been installed.

Power Trax
This was the first lunch box locker manufactured. It has been sold since 1990. This locker has had several names over the years such as LA Locker, All-Track, Lock Right and Power Trax.

E-Z Locker
The E-Z Locker is a lunch box locker that was make from 1997 to 2008 but it has been discontinued.

Spartan Locker
The Spartan Locker is similar to the Lock Right Locker but has been designed to be be easier to install and remove than other lunch box lockers.

Lock Right Locker
The Lock Right Locker has been made since 1993. The Lokka is a similar lunchbox locker sold in Australia.

Weirdest lunch box I have ever seen, there are no coupling devises...
True. The ends of a lunch box locker should have toothed pieces like the pictures.
Maybe a spool like what CJim7 was saying.

A spool with only pins or springs connecting th two halves? They would shear in a heart beat!

When you go around a sharp turn can you tell if it is a locker or a spool?
I locker would unlock to let the tires turn different speeds but it may be noisy.
A spool will be quiet but it would always skid the tires around a turn.

A lunch box locker would have the outer couplers.

I don't think the springs and couplers are keeping it from turning.
If it is a mini-spool there is a piece that locks the 2 sides together but it would be at the pin where you can't see in these pictures.

The springs and pins make this confusing. I agree if it was an lunchbox locker it would have couplers.

Im really stumped on this one. Im leaning towards lunchbox because of the springs....mini spools just dont have them. But I cant for the life of me identify this as an auto-locker because it has no couplers....and if there are, they are internal and not very big at all.

But mini spools aren't solid either, they use a thrust block (of sorts) and Im wondering if this is something else....

Booneman, you need to remove this thing and take it apart for us. Take a bunch of pictures and post them here. Some of us are going to lose sleep over this one until we identify it! :D

I think I have this thing narrowed down to some sort of gearless locker....

That looks really close to it to me.

Im pretty convinced this locker is a Detroit Tractech gearless locker. This pic is from Tim Lund on Pirate. I took this question there and after I suggested it could be a gearless locker, that seems to be the consensus we came up with.

This appears to be your locker :)

I agree. It sure looks like a Tractech.

One question: I wonder why they call it a gearless locker.
Except for selectable lockers, I think all lockers are gearless. No spider or axle gears.
Of course all diffs have ring and pinion gears.

just wondering.
