I am building my current Jeep for Road Trips/Overlanding. The major goal right now is getting it reliable enough to get me there and back using hard surface roads. The first test trip was last summer, 200 miles one way to the Appalachians of Virginia(no doors and all the sides zipped out of the top). Turned out to be a great anniversary trip with my wife and the jeep did good. Took as little highway as possible and many back roads(some dirt) and saw real Americana(I know you guys in the west have dirt roads anywhere you want to go, here in the east, dirt is hard to come by).

In '99 I had a CJ7 as well and did 1,AMC 150 miles from Immokalee, Fl to Ephrata, Pa in 19 hrs with 3 stops to gas up & wiz. What long treks have you all taken your Jeeps on?

Delaware Water Gap...
and back.

Dallas tx to Estes park Colorado and back.

From central PA. to southern California, via down to TN. then out I40. Then 2 years later I made the return trip via I15 to I70, then jumped up to I80 at some point (don't recall) for the remainder. Went out with stock Tracker PG tires (29") and back with 11x15 Tru-tracs (32") pulling a Jartran 4x6 covered trailer. It was roughly 2450 miles one way iirc.

PA........My Back and butt were already feeling the pain on your trip!

Bay Area to the Rubicon and through and back several times........only about AMC 150 miles to the in and coming back about 180 on the out........1965 CJ V-6 powered........no frills! OK when your young!

:D:D:D:D

Haven't done any real miles in the '75 yet, but when I had my '80 CJ5 we traveled pretty much the whole state and New Mexico.

That was key Tarry. "when your young". That was back in the 80's. The Jeep was my dd for 12 or 13 years. Ya got used to it.

I think we have to say PaRenagade wins! My longest trips have been from Portland, Oregon to Kalispell, Montana and back; about 600-700 miles each way depending upon which route you take. “Youth” as was mentioned was on my side in the day so it would be a drive straight through event. I did it in my 1972 CJ5 . Left the top at home and wired up a cassette tape player under the front seat for tunes. I didn’t have any speakers so I used a pair of old fashion head phones (no ear buds in those days and probably couldn’t have heard speakers anyway). My hair was down to my shoulders with a full unruly beard in those days so I put on a red bandana to hold it back, stuck the head phones over the top and down the road I went; I’m sure I was a sight that most likely scared women and children along the way. The best part of the trip was that in Idaho at the time the drinking age was only 19 which made me legal once I hit the boarder. (I may have driven straight through but I didn’t say I was in a hurry.) :chug:

There was a time up that way where you would have stuck out like a sore thumb.........with the hair and all.

Longest trip for my CJ under its own power was from the end of my driveway into the garage.... :D

Branford, ct to Melbourne, Fla a few times in the mid 80's with a 77 CJ7 . 1200+ miles each way.

When I was in my early 20's I packed everything I owned into a bone stock 1960 CJ5 and headed to Washington state from So. Cal. Let me tell you it was slow going with that 3spd lol...55mph top speed wound out so I'm sure I was averaging 45 :D.

Took me about 3 days to get there and it's about a 18 hour drive in a "regular car". For some reason I did this two more times over a 2 year pereod after this initial trip, lol. It was a very long 1200 miles each time lol.

I do recall heading uo to Athens, Ga a few times during the early 80's in my little '67 Kaiser. Seems like it was a 3spd. That was a 500 mile roundtrip to visit my Grandparents. Long haul w/o cruise control. It was my daily for 7 years 'til I was hit w/ a thunderbolt- a 1986 TransAm fully loaded w/ T-tops! This was probably around '90 & the guy was selling it for a song. Always regretted parting with my little Jeep though...

Round trip I haven't exceeded 300 miles. Going up to Northern Az. I have dreamt of doing Busadaves Colorado trip but it's near impossible to get a week off. And I would surely tow it.

Yeah, I'm dying to go to Colorado. Don't know if Pearl can make the trip. Towing isn't an option. Will just wait & see what unfolds.... ^2
