Longest Journey in a CJ?

Longest Journey in a CJ?
I actually fail to see how a Jeep is differen from any number of square vehicles on the road today. Look at most any pick-up, miinivan, an element or the vehicles advertised by those rock and roll hamsters. All more or less square and boxy.

I have a dream of my Jeep in the Rockys. Maybe someday when the kids are grown and I have more money. I will have a hard time convincing my wife to ride that far in it though(I'm pretty sure the Jeep could make it ok). Has anyone done any research on shipping a Jeep? Why does adventure(me) and comfort(my wife) have to be so far apart from each other? I guess we will continue to meet in the middle as we have thus far. Hey Pa, did you ever think about making the trip west again or are you getting too old & soft like some of the other posts on this thread?:D

I don't know where you all are located in PA, but there's an ADESA car auction in York and one in Pittsburgh and those places have haulers in and out all the time. Call the transportation manager there and ask him or her the names of some transport companies that could hook you up.

I'm shipping mine from Indianapolis to Colorado Springs and back for the Colorado trip this year. Remember it's time and wear you are saving - NOT money.

As to the original intent of this thread - I was little, but we took my dad's brand new 79 CJ7 from eastern Indiana to Ouray Colorado that year. Long trip, but we had two weeks and stopped whenever we needed to.

In the movie 'The Good Son', the father drives his boy from Arizona to Maine in a CJ7 in a couple of days so it must be an easy trip.

The boy was always jumpy to anyone walking up to him from behind. I think his hearing was shot from the soft-top.

Those of us who live in the real world would not describe that as easy unless you are comparing it to open heart surgery.

 Really how about the soft ride compared to the stiff feel every bump of a CJ. How about the noise level of a CJ compared to a newer car and truck. And a number of other things that beat you up and wear you out driving a long ways that you don't have in a new car or truck.

Exactly, sometimes it's the journey, when using my Jeep I am not looking for the softest or easiest route, besides I was referring to the shape of a CJ as compared to other vehicles that get decent mileage. After that a trip that isn't a CJ trip is another animal. My Ford Focus has all the goodies one could ask for including decent mileage.

I must have written the post poorly. I'm talking about the SHAPE of the vehicle and nothing else. Folks repeatedly say thathit is impossible for a jeep to get decent mileage due to it's boxy shape. I find the logic difficult to defend when compared to vehicles that are rolling boxes while being considedered to be vehicles that get decent mileage. That was my point nothing more nothing less.

I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to the Jeep experience, becuase I want the Jeep experience to be a Jeep experience. I want to be cold when it's cold outside, I want to be wet when it's wet. I enjoy the rough and bouncy ride and I don't want to have it improved by fancy seats. I like smelling new mowed grass, manuer in the fields, water in the river, even the quick scent of a rotting deer in the brush. Very much the same as the motorcycle experience.

I like this statement. Pretty much sums it up for me. I wanted a motorcycle but my wife and I felt it was too dangerous so my CJ was the compromise.

Took a 'short' 4 hour round trip last year. When it was done, I still didn't want to stop for this reason. Only thing that keeps me from venturing out further is a reliability factor.

I pretty much rode Motorcycles most of my life, but now my financial situation requires me to either have a bike OR a hunting vehicle. The Harley went down the road to pay for this CJ5 . I've ridden many different bikes, my Harley was my Dad's. It truly was a love hate relationship. Loved the Electra Glide look, hated the constant maintenance. I don't believe I'll ever be a true Harley Davidson guy, mostly because I never could fool myself into truly believing the Harley was anything other than a poorly designed 1945 era vehicle attempting to fool people into believing it was reliable today.

Do yourself a favor and read up on Aerodynamic drag coefficient numbers..... You might then better understand what car & truck manufactures do to a square boxed Pick-up to allow it to cheat the air better and therefore use less fuel.

I ride a bike too. No question though, hands down would take a Jeep ride over the bike anyday, forever and ever- even IF Harleys were reliable.
So sorry you had to choose. Am sentimental about heirlooms...

Tarry - Nope won't do it. I honestly don't believe that a legal highway speeds shape makes a darned bit of differance. Sleak modern lines are all related to sales and markeing. It's all about what they can convince us works and looks the way we precieve things should look. In the '30s smooth was in, in the 40's round was the way to go, in the 50's long and low, in the 60's square front ends rulled the day,in the 70's things got shorter, the 80's I forget, in the 90's, look at todays cars all square and some are boxy most of them looking the same ....... it's all one following the other sales :dung:. Look at the modern jeep like vehicles, the shapes are largely the same as they have always been, but the mileage is much better.

Now when we start pushing 100 mph it's awhole different world.

It's funny the one thing you left out was poor gas milage if you such a purist whats the problem?

Well, back to the topic at hand... Maybe not the Longest Journey I've been on- YET- but would Love to make it out to Colorado in August. Any realistic chance my little Scrambler could make a roadtrip of that magnitude?

mtnwhlr - I'm not looking for 25 mpg, I'm looking for a very jeep reasonable ~16 mpg.

Sorry for the hijack......
