I think any vehicle can be made reliable, no matter how old.

I concede that cars from the two decades before and after 1900 will not go as far w/o major maint as your Scrambler if they were both in new condition.

It's just a matter of shoring up each vehicular system that's been chewed on by entropy so each system will work as needed for hours long trips. I'm doing that to my CJ7 . I'm not doing a restoration, I'm just making it trustworthy and easier to maintain by taking off 34 years of collected kruft.

We did a "tour" of the State of Arkansas. "Mill Creek" was on the "list" as well as "Wolf Pen Gap", (I have a pic of "Ole Red" on the summit there).. We made a 900 mile circle, checking every 4 wheel friendly area we could, even stopping over near Branson, Mi.. One of my most favorite ever vacations.. :)

In December 1986 pulled a 1941 Ben Hur trailer from Wellington Colorado to Covelo CA, non stop. Jeep was 79 CJ5 , AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , T-18 , all stock with 31-10.5 BFG mud terrains. Trailer was loaded heavy. Stayed two days in Covelo then drove to Kennewick WA just in time for Christmas. Was one hell of a good Jeep. A buddy of mine still owns it.

Old thread new post,
In 1990 took my 1948 CJ2a with the Ford SB dual side exhausts 34" Denman Ground Hogs and a military trailer from Albany, OR. to Laramie, WY. with A Best Top Tiger Top and no stereo. Just me & 2 passengers, only stopping for gas & restrooms. Doing 65+ all the way (w/5.38 ratio R&P) except through the towns & cities.
Will never do that again. Colorado, Wyoming, Utah the Rockies is fun in a Jeep, but had to rest a day before we did anything, half deaf and half numb.

I am building my current Jeep for Road Trips/Overlanding. The major goal right now is getting it reliable enough to get me there and back using hard surface roads. The first test trip was last summer, 200 miles one way to the Appalachians of Virginia(no doors and all the sides zipped out of the top). Turned out to be a great anniversary trip with my wife and the jeep did good. Took as little highway as possible and many back roads(some dirt) and saw real Americana(I know you guys in the west have dirt roads anywhere you want to go, here in the east, dirt is hard to come by).

In '99 I had a CJ7 as well and did 1,150 miles from Immokalee, Fl to Ephrata, Pa in 19 hrs with 3 stops to gas up & wiz. What long treks have you all taken your Jeeps on?

I built my 80 CJ5 last year for overlanding and still working on it. I drove from Wittmann Arizona to Homer Alaska in 5 days. Then this past summer drove from Homer Ak past the arctic circle, down to Mexico, up pacific coast highway and back to Homer. Total trip mileage just under 16,000 miles.
