1984 CJ-7 (just bought it, so I have to do some work and see what it has in it.. other than 4.2L Auto.. 4" lift, 33" tires... my '75 had a 304 2" Burbank supspension, warn winch, full cage, all the goodies, the '79 had a 401 turbo charged hi-po with t98 or 18, which ever one had the granny low first gear (never can remember which).. had all the items needed to 4wheel, none of the show and go poopie.. I don't believe "chrome will get you home"! I'm also not one to go out to see if I can tear up my jeep, I go where I must, usually with a group that I hung with.. Used to be part owner in Diablo Off Road Center in Concord California.. Jack Essex owned Diablo 4WD, George Clause was Mr. Base CAmp, and mine was "Sounds Etc" all under one big roof "the Diablo Off Road Center"..
like the upgrade for the blower motor on the heater, there must be a part number that upgrades the alternator.. just added a winch, lights, etc.. have the stock alternator that doesn't get over 11 vdc when anything like the heater, turn signals, etc are on.. but.... my alternator uses the serpentine belt, so.. what alternator in the 135@ and up will bolt up? if anyone has done this.. I had a/c, disconnected it all, but the compressor is still mounted since I can't find a bracket to add an idler pulley in place of it.. will add second battery also, with rectifier (isolation) circuit.. the alternator as it stands is on the passenger side, under the a/c compressor, turns clockwise.. AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l '84 CJ7 by the way.. NO EMMISSION :dung:, so that stuff is gone.. guess since I can't find the by-pass pulley, I'll just do that onboard air system..

Model is a delco 10si one wire. Several on ebay at $100.00 for 140 amps order the "clocking" you need. Not sure of individual parts house part numbers but usually you can take yours in and match it up. I think mine came from a loaded suburban late eighties i think.

I once had the stock 12 si, which is what you should have, in my '86 converted to a 100 amp alternator by an auto electrical shop. To make sure it would work right I added a 8 ga. ground wire from the battery to the alternator housing and a larger fusible link wire for the alternator. I also changed the "Sense" wire, to go to the hot line or red wire on the fuel gauge under the dash. I get a 15 volts charging on a cold engine and 14.5 when it warms up. This prevents the usual voltage drop when the wires go thru the firewall at the fuse box. A simpler way to wire it would be like what is stated in the post that Tinhorn sent, which I found to be quite interesting. I hear the Delco CS130 is a good way to go as it puts out a steadier current along with more amperage, but this requires a bit of rewireing to adapt it.

I also have a 1978 F-250 and did it for this, so I installed a Ford taurus 3G alternator on my Jeeps AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . These are 130 amp alternators and are as common as can be. I picked up three for $20.00 ea at my local junkyard. Keeps my back-up stock to a minimum. I did have to fab/mod alternator bracket on the Jeep and change pulleys out, but wasn't too hard

Here's a link I used for the trucks upgrade. My 3g upgrade in a 78/79.. Lots of pics. - FSB Forums

CJ's are expensive enough and anytime I can use JY parts I do.

It's 140 amps. They are not all the same though, some are less amps so look at whats stamped on the case

I put in a 140amp1-wire. Works great!

how much was yours? looking at the internet prices, they start over $200 and go all the way past $600? that's an expensive alternator?

No not expensive.

105 Amp. $70

140 Amp. $121

DB is a great place. Been buying ATV starters from them for years. Customer service is tops and they honor their warranty.
