The AMC20 is a good diff but you MUST put in one piece axles and weld those weak tubes. If you don't beat the heck out of the drive line you should be OK for a long time. The 30 is a pretty good axle too.

Anything can be broken, it just depends on the circumstances...
 
Thanks!!;) Will do on the one piece axles and weld up the tubes to the center section. The Dana 30 is similar to the ones in the ZJ's so that I am familar with and have no problem running. Just new to the model 20 in the back!
 
You may want to upgrade the AMC20 with the larger 11 in brakes also.
 
I think he is talking about the Narrow Track vs. the Wide Track brakes? Correct me if I am taking what you said the wrong way. The older Narrow Track Axles had bigger rear brakes, when they went to the Wide Track, they got smaller by a bit.

All right folks, update on my CJ5 project: Whew , been busy as a one arm paperhanger and made some cool deals so far. Here is the latest:
-scored a 92 YJ complete with a real nice tub and frame, soooooo the CJ5 is going to run the YJ tub, windshield, frame and springs with the D35
-scored a free wide track Cj Dana 30 for the front that a friend is pulling to do a Dana 44 swap, so going to run that on the YJ springs with my 6 bolt knuckles and brakes
-going to do the SOA with this set up
-working on getting either a 318(can have for free) or a 360(runs sweat) with a NP435
-can have a NP205 or 208 TC out of a Dodge truck. Might try the 205 and see what it looks like in the chassis, if neither seems feasable will try and score a Dana 300 for in it.
-needless to say things have changed A LOT but for the better I think. This should be a nice set up, with more room and longer wheelbase and wider track. The YJ was an excellent deal, so this is working nicely :D
I will also have a lot of YJ and CJ5 parts to sell then too or trade for what I need:D

So thats where I am at right now, let me know what ya think!!
 
I think you have some excellent plans and some great 'scores'!!! You CJ is going to be allot of work but it's going to pretty unique when you get do.

It's going to make for a great build!

I guess the obvious question is... will the tub be shortened or the frame lengthened? If I missed that somewhere, I apologize as the coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

If I read that right you said you are going to use the D35? If it were me I'd stay with the AMC20 it's really a better axle with the few upgrades it needs. The 35 is pretty weak.
 
Hes using the Yj frame. :) Your plan sounds pretty good save for the Dana 35. Id fix up the AMC20 way before using a Cclip dana 35. The 11 in. x 2 in. brakes came on earlier narrow trac Amc 20s , wide track were 10.75 x 1.5 I believe. Id also be on the look out for a Dana 300 . Nice solid all around Transfer Case . Theres one in the classifieds for $AMC 150 .

Thanks guys!! I would use the AMC20 if it wasn't so much narrower than the YJ D35. For now I think I will use the D35 as its what I have, unless I come up with a wide track 44 along the way. Being a Zj and Xj guy for years, the 35 doesn't scare me, it has a huge aftermarket following and ZJ and XJ guys wheel em with little issues in the application I am looking at it for. Yes I am running the YJ frame, tub and springs so I do not have to lengthen the CJ5 frame(in fact it will be up for sale) . As for the Transfer Case , I have three options, I can have a NP205 or NP208 for free from a dodge truck friend or find a Dana 300 to buy or trade parts for. The 205 is very similar to the Dana 300 as its a gear to gear TC that can be twin sticked and is virtually indestructable. The 208 is an aluminum case TC, but is much stronger than a 203 or 231 aluminum case , but not as relaible as a Dana 300 or NP205 and is chain drive so it can't be twin sticked. What should I expect to pay for a good Dana 300 ?? The Dana 300 is a 23 spline input correct??
 
Dana 300s usually go anywhere from $AMC 150 to $400 from what Ive seen. If you hold out and wait you "may" run into one cheaper but $AMC 150 is usually bottom dollar.
 
A friend of mine thinks he can get me a spicer 20 wide track axle, they did offer a wide track 20 correct?? If so I may seriously concider buying that to match the front WT30. I also have a friend with a scout Dana 44 I might be able to get, just emailed him to get more info on it and see whats up with it.
Does anyone know how wide the YJ D35 diff is??

Yeah, they made wide 20's. With new one piece axles and the tubes welded and or trussed they make a pretty good axle. Check that the 44 from the Scout isn't a narrow one, but they are the superior axle to a 20. As far as a 35 goes, (don't take this personally) I know nothing of them because I just toss them in the junk pile when I get them in a trade or part out, and sell them for scrap weight. They're just weak, and I have never been able to even give one away leave alone sell it!
 
Dave, I appreciate the info and no offence taken, the 35 is a like out or hate it diff. I don't mind it , not my first choice but it works well for a moderate wheeler and for free it can hold up for a while. I did find a great site: www.jeeptech.com , it had all the diff specs and dimensions which was REALLY cool!! The YJ 35 is 60" wide vs. the WT 20 which is 53" wide, too big a difference in my opinion. So I am looking at measuring the international 44 and see what it measures and looking into the WT 20 and see how much it is.


Question::: Does anyone know why the front diffs are wider than the rear diffs??
The front WT is 56" while the rear WT is 53", thats 3" which is signifigant in my opinion. I've heard before that the front diff in a 4x4 should be wider than the rear, but no one has ever said why or how much wider is ok. If some one could shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated!!
 
:D Well the ZJ is just about stripped out and will be leaving the garage this week if all goes well, then the YJ will arrive soon followed by the CJ I hope!! Can not wait to get em home and really get over them and get some real pics!! Can't get crazy working on them til my sons ZJ is done and I get my youngest boys bedrooms done(remodeiling one bedroom into two), then its CJ/YJ time!!

IIRC from the stone age I call my younger years, it has something to do with the rear tires being able to track inside the front tires for traction and handling purposes. Gives the rear tires something fresh to bite into.
Might have to do with turning radius as well, keeping the rear more in line with the fronts in a turn.
 
Thats what I have been told, that it helps the rear tires track the front in a turn. Thanks for the responce!!

Just going to go the WT axle route with it at this point. I am confident the WT 30 and 20 should hold up just fine for my intended use and 33's.
 
Ok due to monay problems, the plans are probably going to change greatly on this project. Its going to be more YJ than CJ at this point as I am probably just going to run the YJ axles with a 231 TC to keep costs down and simplify things. I am forced to sell my ZJ:( to save some money on fuel and insurance and generate some cash for bills. But I have the CJ/YJ project to play with so this should be ok. I am actually looking forward to playing with a new project and seeing it evolve as time and money allow. So the only Cj stuff for now is the front clip and dash and some minor odds and ends , till I can get the parts accumulated to do a more CJ driveline. I know you guys are probably cringing and I am sorry bout that, but I need to work with what I have for now and just concentrate on getting it road worthy. I will post some pics this weekend I hope!!:chug:
