what do you mean trap rain water??

With the top of the console open - the radio will be swamped with water... :)

For that much money I would want to see it up close, it is a good idea but if it isn’t rain tight it will be more than just a nuisance, it will be a disaster.
I will say that I like the idea well enough to put off mounting the stereo in the dash of my CJ until I can ponder this a bit more. I will be more inclined to build rather than buy but if I knew where I could look at one of these I would be willing to drive a couple of hours to look at it.

wow i never did think about that.. that would suck if water did get in.. hmmm.. how do most you have your radios set up?? i would think for that price they water better not get into it.. i called one of our 4 wheel parts place and they didnt carry them just the smitybelt.. lame

Shameless plug time. I have that exact console posted for sale here in our classifieds section:

For Sale - Tuffy deluxe stereo console - Jeep-CJ Forums

As water getting stuck in there. Only the console section is completely closed. The front section where the stereo is located is completely open on the bottom. I can take some pictures if you'd like.

yeah take some pictures.. so then it would get wet i imagine right?? what didnt you like about it, if you dont mind me asking?

Jwill22, you should buy this thing from Elwood if it will fit between the seats. The bottom is open, of course!! That is brilliant. And the way the front cover works is brilliant as well, both secure and water tight. It would be a bit of a pain to open and close every time you changed stations or CD’s. I am thinking a hole with a plex cover right over the remote eye on the radio. I am thinking about a one handed CB so I would just need a plug for the mike mounted in the side of the box. This is doable.
Elwood if I didn’t have some other ideas I want to incorporate I would send you money, I hope you find a buyer and I thank you for your input.:notworthy:

There are four decent pictures in the classifieds listing as well. These three are straight down from the top. The first one is with both lids open;

This one the storage section is closed and the radio bay is open

Or, securely lock both the radio and the storage area. The lid for the radio bay closes under the storage bay and then locks. So both compartments are locked tight. And will keep the rain out.

I love this console. The only reason this one is for sale is becuase it is 10" wide and won't fit correctly between my seats. I bought Bestop Trailmax Pro seats. And they are wider than your standard CJ seat. I ended up buying and installing an 8" console. I just have this one sitting in the garage, it's still got the original box, I never fully assembled it after I test fit it.

It's not to mount the radio in but I like my console, it matches my speakers.:D

IO man, you're too freaking much... Thank you scruffy_smiley.png

I don't have the stereo console, but I do run a "Tuffy" console & I have to say they are of excellent quality.

I have a new polished stainless dash that I have been dragging my feet on cutting a hole for the radio. I had discarded the console mount because of the rain water problem and access problem but I think I like this a bunch better than a dash mount.
the possibility of having the radio be in the jeep when I come back to it is quite attractive. :D
You guys are great , there are so many good ideas and so much information here it boggles the mind. Thanks for letting me hang out with you.
I'm gonna be out all day tomorrow so happy turkey day and the only holiday advice I have is "eat too much and take a good nap after your football game of choice"
If the Cowboys get beat by the raiders tomorrow I may be too embarrassed to show my face for a day or two.
