Build Thread Mike's '67 cj5 ongoing restoration
Been away for awhile but making progress.I have the radio, speaker, and antenna installed.Tunes! Didn't want to cut dash but eventually decided to go ahead with it.I saved the piece that I cut out if I ever won't to go back to bone stock.Iused some marine speakers that are semi water proof. The sound is marginal and I may build some speaker boxes for the rear and use better quality speakers.I went with the "old school" look on the antenna .Had real good luck with the Alpine radios.Nothing fancy but they work.Put a set of 31-10.50x15 bfg a/t on 15x8 centerlines on that were recycled from the '69 .pics to follow when the sun comes out some day.?? mike

I'll be taking pics as I go, waiting for approval

I gotta ask. What is the black duct work running up next to the OBA and into the drivers firewall?

Hello J R , that is the duct for the fresh air intake to heater.totaly stock for early CJ5 's. It attaches on the side of grille shell down low and has a little scoop thing help the flow. Mike:)

ps: did a little mud racing myself back in the day.Mostly around or. and wa.
Loads of fun and took my son thats now 40 to all the races.

This thread is what amazes me most on this site. First this is some fantasic work this guy is doing. Having worked fabrication for the Air Force for 27 years I like seeing this stuff. That said the work is not the most impressive thing about this thread, It's the fact that the guy doing it is 68 years young! I love it! Mike you go dude! Impressive work! Very nice looking jeep

Thanks mstar. Yeah I was only three when Dad started racing the jeep in my avatar, but I remember watching him. He ran EC4WDA in central PA. Hill climbs, dirt drags and obstacle courses. I found old pics on www.jeepfan.com and had a flood of old memories.
rr44mag: I don't touch the body work on our jeeps and trucks, I leave it to my 69 year young Dad. He runs rings around me, but i'm learning. :D

Time to revive this thread. Finally got some pics Saturday. It was a nice sunny day here in Oregon so we went to a cruise-in about 30 miles away.Drove the jeep there 65-70 mph all the way.Got the Bestop Super Top installed. Also mounted some tractor style backup lights on the rear.Currently I have the oil pan off working on a leaky rear main seal.:(
Not sure what is next, maybe tow-bar tabs on bumper.

that looks slick as shiny new penny. I love it. Great work!

Thanks J R ,never really thought of it that way. PO responsible for multi-shade paint.

Ordered the clevis tabs for tow-bar from Ballistic Fabrication.I have the same ones on my TJ,nice pieces. pics to follow. Mike S.

this is about installing clevis tabs on the front bumper.I decided to bolt them on rather than weld because the bumper is powder coated and I wanted to maintain the finish. First thing is to drill and tap for 7/16" grade 8 bolts.Next was a trip into the bead blaster to clean surface than a spray down with POR metal-ready etching acidPainted tabs and removed front bumper.Layed out and marked for holes using tape to protect finish.Drilled four 7/16"holes and painted inside holes to prevent rust. Also drilled and taped 1/4"-20 holes for license plate relocated to center of bumper.
Installed tabs and license plate onto bumper then remounted bumper to jeep. This was a simple job with many steps.Just thought I would share.Maybe someone that hasn't done this type of work will gain some knowledge. Mike

pictures part two

Great looking tabs. What size bolts did you use and is that a factory front bumper?

Yep , factory re-pop from quadtra-tec.I used 7/16" fine thread grade 8 .
Don't know what the shear strength is but should be ok.Put them on mostly for something to hook the tow bar to. Mike:)

tensile should be about 17000 lbs. I prefer 1/2, just cause they're a little more common

:)
Those pulling points take a bunch of load especially when your being pulled out through some soft stuff.........on a dead straight line pull those will probably hold....... anything off to the side and the bolts or bumper may bend or shear off..........

:D:D:D:D

It's not that kind of jeep.:D:D:D:D . I understand the point you make about not being up to the bullet proof standard and figured a side pull for recovery would be risky. Thanks for checking out my build never the less.
I may weld them as well sometime in the future. Cheers, Mike

I'm just happy you used the term "clevis" correctly. Some folks seem to want to call them shackles or D rings. :)
