I've been trying to look up my vin # and casting number. I think I've mostly figured it out but I have a few questions My vin # is FI03IFG. I think the F stands for Flint, the I is for Sept. The 03 is the third day of the month. Then I run into trouble. I can't find any suffix codes for the IFG. FG for a 283 2 barrel is a 57 corvette. Do you think that's it? The unknown I is driving me crazy. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I'm not sure what number you have there. A VIN number is usually 17 characters long, and the engine ID numbers for Chevy, to the best of my knowledge, don't contain alpha characters.

The FI03IFG is stamped on the front of my block.

And the 6GM 373548 is on the back.

According to my google research the motor vin is half of the vehicle vin. These are the two numbers they compare to see if the motor and vehicle "match". This probably isn't relevant for a lot of builds but I had a heck of a time finding new valve covers because the bolts are offset and I kept getting referred to Corvette ones which made me question where my 283 originated.

I looked at this site: Chevy Casting Number identification - Block casting numbers and found numbers close to your casting numbers, but not exact. I know this doesn't answer your question, but It may help you to find out when your engine was made, and what vehicle, your engine originally came from.

Also found this,
3731548....283...1957......2 bolt main...No side motor mounts
only off by 1 digit

That vary well could be because Jeep never put a 283 in a Jeep so someone over the years has swaped it in to your Jeep.

Yes my Jeep could be in a Johney Cash song. It's more like three Jeeps, a wagon and now perhaps a Corvette put together. I read my engine ID # (which I was inaccurately called my vin#) by using the resources from the nastyz28.com website which has a lot of interesting information on engine identification. I think my 283 is from a 57 Corvette because of the off set bolt patterns on the valve covers.

and the
FG at the end of the number. I couldn't find anything about the second I however. You can also see why I'm digging around I there. Hopefully the water condensation is from my valley pan vent and switching to side vents will solve the problem and it's not something bigger. Although when in doubt bore it out. Go big or go home.
