Sometimes I can be my own worst enemy. After the last 2 days of working on the Scrambler I felt like punching myself repeatedly in the face. Not the kind of punches that give you a black eye , no , the ones that break your orbital bone leaving your eye to fall out of the socket bearly held on by the optic nerve. What happened that would make me pummel myself into near coma like conditons? Read on my friends. :)

2 days ago I got the rebuilt Mc2100 , and hei igniton humming along together in perfect unison. I probably spent a 1/2 hour just listening to it idle away with no blips or blurbs before finally shutting it down. I even put in a tech question thread that Id check it in the morning to see how well she fired in cooler temps. I came down the next morning, she fired for a couple seconds and went dead. What didnt I get right? What didnt I do? What did I miss or mess up. What an inept pile of doo doo I must be.:(

I spent a good 5 hours the last 2 days figuring this out. I messed with the mixture screws a bit and all I could get out of it was a backfire and sputter now and then. I could never get it to run long enough to adjust the carb when it was running. For some reason it just wouldnt idle. I said to myself "fine" and went back to the old carb that I hadnt messed with. to my suprise the same freakin thing happened. Then I finally just sat back and realized one important factor.

I was out of gas. :o What made it even worse was I walked up to the corner gas station with $5 to put in my 2 gallon can. I was watching the pump nozzle cause I didnt want to overflow it. When I turned my head to look I was already at $6. I had to leave the gas there and go back to get another $1:laugh:

Its funny now but wow was I pissed. So Im back where I started originally and have to swap carbs again!!! Im thinking that for once I want a Cj with a working fuel gauge.

Honestly I just want others to learn from my stupidity. :o I "KNEW" I screwed something up fuel delivery wise. I just didnt know that the screw up was not adding fuel.:laugh:

Sounds like my week...Glad to hear you figured out what was wrong!

:cool:Just got my new fuel gauge put in and working. I was so scared I was topping it off after every gallon I drove out.:rolleyes:

been there, done that, got a tee shirt some place, just too embarrassed to wear it.:o

I feel since I reached that 50 year old make those days happen more often.

I did something very similar to you buddy but it was at work. I drove my CJ5 into work and the Jeep started sputtering. I shut it of and then after work jumped to fire her up and got nothing but cranking. I checked the carb and it shot some gas but wouldn't fire. I tried till the battery dies and got a ride home. Two days later I had my buddy tow me home and I spent a good three hours looking the Jeep over. I had spark and good compression then I looked at the carb again and no fuel. WTF. I had nothing pumping out of the line. then I looked dowd at the rubber line to the inlet of the mechanical pump and the hose clamp was loose. So basically I had to get towed because I was sucking air. Two turns of the screwdriver and she fired right up.

I feel for you man.

Don't feel bad I just rebuilt the carb on my jeep. Got done fired her up set the carb up she idled and ran great.:D Took it out for a spin and hit first and hit the gas ran great, second no problem, third at 2000rpm it started to sputter and spit,:( Took back to the shop and started to readjust the acculerator pump and metering rod linkage.:D Took her for a ride same:censored: thing. Did this about three times:mad: same relsults!!! Well now I'm pissed, then it comes to me the only thing I didnt do is set the dry float setting. Well I looked at the old needle valve and fitting guess what I found two washer on the end of the old needle valve and only one on the new fitting causing the float to be set to low running the bowl out of gas. After resetting the float to 1/4" bolted the carb up and went back to readjusting everything. Took her for a ride and she runs great now. Lesion learned just do every thing and dont think I'm not messing with the float level don't need to adjust it. WRONG!!!!!!!! I felt like an idiot:o But a good learning curve!:D

Pete, a working fuel guage IS NOT a luxury item. :D

I love the stories , thanx guys.

Pete, a working fuel guage IS NOT a luxury item. :D

Ive had 8 different Cjs now and not 1 darn 1 had a working fuel gauge. :o

Yeah Pete, this was back sometime in the spring, don't remember when, but it was still pretty cold and I had the hardtop on. Jumped in, fired her up and off to work we went, about half way there, sputter, sputter, cough, cough, dead on the side of the road.

Under the hood, I'm checking everything, spark plugs, coil, everything I can think of, jump back in and it justs rolls over again and again and again. So, I take the top off the carb, fuel bowl's bone dry...

Call the wife, have her bring me a gas can, call the boss tell him I'm on the side of the road...

Trust me Pete, you're not alone :chug:

Lol I just remembered this one...

Back a few years ago I lived in Las Vegas. I was driving a truck OTR, running 11 western states. I was up in Salt lake City, UT and I get a call from my (then fairly newlywed) wife. Asked if I would be home soon...Says she was driving the CJ7 down the freeway and it started sputtering and not running right. I tell her to look at the fuel gauge and it reads Empty. So she asked if I can bring her some gas! WTH?? I'm 10 hours away minimum, and still need to get off-loaded and re-loaded for the trip home...
I called her a service truck to get her some fuel....
