need a little help

How do I find out the exact engine in my CJ5 . I know it's has the original engine 6cyl but there where 2 different types from what I'm told. Also, I need help find what the exact paint color my jeep. It's a 1977 silver one, but what I want to know what the exact name or are paint recorders even around any more.

The engine code number is on the machined surface of the right side of the block between #2 & #3 cylinders up high near the bottom of the head. For a 1977 AMC I-6 the 1st number should be either a 9 or a 1. A 9 means the engine was built in 1976 and a 1 means it was built in 1977. Engine dates run on a calendar year not a model year so a 1977 model year could have an engine built in either 1976 or 1977. The next two numbers tell you what month the engine was made. The letter after that indicates the engine size. An A or a C in 1976 and 1977 indicates a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , 1 barrel or 2 barrel respectively. An E indicates a AMC 232 i6 and will be a single barrel carb. The last two numbers are the day of the month the engine was made.

The silver paint for 1977 is 6J-Silver Frost Metallic.

PS: The VIN engine code is not the same as the engine block code. The VIN may tell you what the OEM engine was but the engine code will tell you what you have.

The AMC engines were painted blue up to I believe 80 then black from 81 and up. The paint is code is EN-66 if your planning to paint the engine as well.
