ON THE HUNT AGAIN
Got a buddy with a 1969 CJ5 225 v6.
He'll be driving it and with no warning it'll just shut off.
He can't get it to start until about 15 min has passed then vroom it'll fire right up, giving it some gas of course.

He had the problem before and after replacing the following parts.
He has a new poly gas tank, electric fuel pump, and replaced the cap, rotor, condensor, and points.

IDEAS? :bang:

coil overheating?

Fuel tank vent line blocked?

After it dies, open the air cleaner and see if the accel. pump is squirting fuel into the carb. that will eliminate the fuel system or not.

Says coil doesn't feel hot when it shuts off.

Uses an electric pump, no return line and tank has no vent, the cap
doesn't seal properly as a little fuel will leak out during a turn so it's getting air in and out around the cap so no vacuum issues in the tank.

He pulled the air cleaner and can see it squirt fuel.

If its getting fuel thru the squirters after the engine dies on its own, then it pretty much has to be the ignition system.

how about checking spark right after it dies? does it still have spark then?

Kind of sounds like the classic CJ vapor lock to me.

Hasn't checked for spark.

Has a spacer under the carb, and all the fuel lines under the hood are cool to the touch so no boiling fuel.

Causes of vapor lock?

Could it be in the ignition switch?

Id throw a fuel filter in there also. Sounds like vapor lock though. If hes got spark then somewhere along the line its probably boiling.

One of my quads did this all the time... vapor lock, that was until I realize the breather out of the cap was pinched... once I remedied that, it was all good. Never had a CJ do this, but I have heard many times that it does happen.

Anywhere the line goes over the block or around exhaust including if you have a muffler tucked up indside the frame near a line. Fuel filters are usually a culprit as well. I take it youve decided it has good spark consistently?

I had it for awhile with one of those clear fuel filters. Great for seeing debris , not so good otherwise.

Yeah he used my coil.
But did you actually pull a plug wire, insert a spark plug and check for a spark? If that is the stock ignition it uses points and a condenser. Could the condenser be bad and saturating the coil? You said you were getting fuel from the squirters so you should be able to get it to fire (even for a short while) so I'm still leaning towards and electrical problem.

A check list...

  • Air
  • Fuel
  • Spark
Air - That's a gimmie... :)
Fuel, it squirts when you open the throttle.
Spark, still not verified...

Hell, it should start if you just poor fuel down the carb throat. The bowl doesn't even need to be full... :)

True, I'm thinking something in the ignition.
It squirts fuel after it shuts off so I'm not thinking vapor lock, but I have been wrong before.
We swapped the coil in case it was bad, and he has all new parts in the distributor.
Could it be a voltage regulator or ballist?

When it stops...

Pull coil wire, insert spark plug, ground plug and check for spark. NO SPARK? Run a wire from + side of battery to coil + (bypassing ballast resister)
