You need to do your research first for what you need legally in TX. I have no idea what the SMOG laws are, so that's what you need to look in to.
The "CATALYST" system on the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l consisted of a belt driven air pump, a copper tube system that pumped that air in to the exhaust manifold, a diaphragm, and a catalytic converter. If your system is in good shape, be careful to take it off, there's lots of CJ owners in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Kalifornia that will pay good money for it.
A lot of times though, the system will have holes in it, or when you try to remove it from the exhaust manifold the banjo bolts will break.
Another common issue is that the old catalytic converters, that were filled with platinum "shot", they were prone to plug. The "shot" on in the inside were the catalytic converters plugs full of carbon and doesn't allow the gas to flow freely. Again, this is one of those things you need to research to see if you need to replace, or can get rid of all together. If you chose to replace it, take it to a scrap metal recycler , they'll pay you good money for it

Hello everyone I own a 1980 CJ7 Jeep I6 And I'm trying to get all of the emission controloff for better mileage etc. If anyone knows how to get it all off or any suggestion that would all be appreciated, THX
I have an 83 (different air injection system) in Kalifornia that I just replaced it a Howell TBI system. It was expensive and time consuming but it passed the very strict emissions control testing here without an issue. In fact, it has run flawlessly since the day I installed it.
Gets rid of everything except the EGR, PCV, and charcoal vapor recovery can (in CA.) I don't know the laws where you are, so check that.

Well in Tx there are pretty much no emission laws for an antique vehicle (which mine is) and so I am in the process of just trying to figure how to take ALL of it off (if that is even possible). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
