Hi All! I'm new to posting here, but i'm always checking in and trying to learn from you all for my own jeep problems, and I'm hoping some of the experts on here can help me identify and help explain some of the problems i'm having with some of the sensors on my 1986 CJ7 , which i believe is the stock straight 6 cyl, AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ...All of my gauges work, and i dont notice anything not working on it other than the dome light, and the exaust really stinks due to how rich the engine is running, which i'm assuming is from the computer not getting everything from all the the sensors

I bought it a few months ago out of state (I live in PA) and did not notice that the previous owner cut the wires off, or disconnected some of the engine sensors that i need to get this thing inspected for emissions..

I'm posting a few pictures of what I'm talking about, and hope you can tell me where i wire them to...

The first one is located on the left side of the intake manifold and has a 2 prong female connector...but i cant locate the male end for this.

The second one is the oxygen sensor, but as you can see, they cut it off and i can't locate any bare cut black wire for where this went. Any ideas how and where to wire it?

the third pic is of connector in the foreground(its kinda blurry) that is spliced on the yellow 12 gauge wire going into that wiring junction block that is located to the outside of the steering column on the firewall, and i have no idea what its for.

And the 4th and 5th pics are of another wire connector disconnected in that wire sheath. Orange, 12 gauge....

I know this might be tough to identify just from pics, but any help is really appreciated.

Thanks alot

Hey bud,
Try this guy for a nice big laminated color wiring guide for your problems:

I bought mine a couple of months ago from the -Bay, and while it IS the diagram from an '84 CJ (vs my '86), you should be fine. It will clearly illustrate where your missing wires should be. I paid somewhere around $17 for it, the diagram is about 17" x 11". There may be others around, this one worked for me. Good Luck!

Thx Windshear... that does look like a useful site.
I do have the haynes manual wire schematic. That print gives me from point A to point B. But i want to know where it goes in between.

If i can get pointed to the right direction of where the oxygen sensor comes through the firewall to the computer, for example(i think it goes straight to the computer).

I'm hoping if anybody is poking around in their engine, they might notice that wire junction on the drivers side near the steering column and notice that wire i pointed out, and tell me what it connects to.

Any info like that would really help, and pics would be fantastic!

Thanks for any help in advance!

Getting one of those wiring diagrams does sound like a good plan. With your wiring as it is make sure you still have a computer in there, located in front of the glove box. Since you have to deal with emissions testing another option would be to buy and install one of those legal for your state fuel injection kits. Otherwise getting your existing system up and working it could be quite a chore, so good luck with that. I would suggest starting with the oxy sensor and making sure it is working, then according to my wiring diagram, it goes into a gray wire to the computer at the #8 and #9 positions. There will be a few unused plugs that go to options that your vehicle does not have.

:agree: Got one for my 79 CJ7 awhile back. Awesome. Helped me completely rebuild my harness.

My guesses: 1st pic water temp; 2nd pic O2 sensor (didn't think CJ's had an O2 sensor though); 3rd pic Windshield Washer Motor. Not sure on the other, as it is kind of hard to tell the true color of the wire. Rod

Single Orange wire is under hood light.
