Engine Exhaust Pipe - Does this need an exhaust flange gasket?

I have an 86 CJ7 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , stock exhaust manifold. There was a leak between the manifold and the exhaust pipe. There was no gasket there. After some research it seems some need it some don't.

Does this one need it or does it just need to be tightened to the manifold?

I'm looking at something like this: OMIX 17450.02 Exhaust Flange Gasket

I have an 86 CJ7 as well and have encountered the same problem. Did you hook it up and go without the gasket? Did it work or is there still an exhaust leak?

I pulled the exhaust off replaced the studs and got new brass nuts that are a little taller. This allowed me to get a short socket on there since the deep socket wouldn’t fit with the curve of the exhaust. It seems to have closed the gap no problem and I don’t have any leaks that I can tell. I don’t know how the gap got there in the first place though. That part still remains a mystery.

Thanks, I also replaced tile studs and used new brass nuts. Hopefully this is how it’s supposed to be.
