Rear main seal ?
It's a full circle seal that goes around the crankshaft.
Only way to service that seal on that engine is where you are right now.

the part we need is the silver part around the brass pilot bearing but right inside the holes where the flywheel attaches. Any idea what that's called? My buddy knew but I forgot what he called it. He just said "try to find one"
thanks

You have some great helpers here on the forum. I would replace the rear main seal as a maintenance item as was suggested .
I too have never seen a adaptor /locator sleeve like that. With that being said I would be inclined to leave it alone IF it is tight and not worn and you can remove pilot bushing without disturbing that sleeve. The sleeve is a press fit and to remove and press new one in may require removing crank or making a jig to put it in using the flywheel bolt holes.
The other thing is the pilot shaft bushing. Is it worn ? If you can determine that it is indeed in good condition I would leave the whole works as is.
I did read the link that gert gave . Very interesting .Its like they forgot to put a locator shoulder on the crank flange. my 2 cents. mike

First time I have ever heard of something like this, usually its part of the crankshaft not separate from it

Thanks Gert for that link and thanks everyone else for the comments.
I have very little experience with engines or vehicles in general, this is a learning experience for me. My friend however has a lot of experience and is a professional mechanic, like said above he had never seen a sleeve/adapter like that. "Bad design" was his comment.

I believe I can locate what I need from the information given. Thanks a bunch guys.

Oh, I'm replacing the whole motor with a rebuilt one from jasper motors so no need to replace the rear main seal.

Again, I really appreciate the help

Just for reference, the Jeep part number for crankshaft insert is: J8132262.

Original jeep crank shaft insert : J8132262
(You'll likely still need a pilot bushing but it's possible it came as one unit)

If you can't find that and need to fabricate your own to remate the GM 2.5 motor to the SR4 Transmission :
Outer bushing/crankshaft insert : gm part# 10018699

Inner bushing: PB-7501295

You'll have to bore out the GM crankshaft insert and press in the inner bushing.
The GM part is also hard to find but I ordered mine from the Fiero store.
Hope that helps the next guy some
