BTW-Flush the inside of the new gas tank with about a qt of gas before you install it. After the pressure test.

I am going to try to get engine running first.. then figure out what i need to do. if i do need to rebuild, will be a good learning experience, with my pops as the teacher..
 
since I am busy at work (CPA in tax season), I spent $20 to get the tank pressure tested. the shop said it was all good. I went ahead and ordered new filler and vent hoses and a new fuel filter.

My Bro-in-law suggested putting a clear filter inline after the factory filter so i will do that when i replace the rubber hoses.

next step is to clean off the underside of the jeep, clean and paint the skid and tank.
 
If you are using a factory fuel and sending unit inside the tank be aware that there is a filter sock on the fuel draw tube. I can see why you might add a filter near the new fuel tank just for a precaution, but why add a fuel filter AFTER the filter in the engine bay? It really doesn't make sense to me. A filter a couple inches away from a filter? :) sounds like trust issues to me. It seems to me that you'd be adding another a flow restriction after the fuel pump.
 
As Lumpy does, I have a filter near the tank, as per recommendation from the 21 gallon tank manufacturer and a factory type filter after the fuel pump.

thanks, I might do that instead.. I am not really sure why he says all the scrambler guys do that.. maybe to have a quick visual?

the biggest problem is I dont want to mess with my hard fuel lines..

Edit: Lumpy, how do you have your filter mounted? is it where the soft lines go to pump? any pictures?

My canister filter is mounted on the forward edge of the battery tray. I run the rubber line from the OEM steel line, to the filter and then to the pump. ;)

Bad gas-NOPE. But we do fill from gas cans and such and filters are cheaper than fuel pumps. :D
Really don't understand why you don't change your fuel filter. It's your Jeep, your choice. The filters only cost like $5.00. :rolleyes:

In almost 33 years I'm still only on my second fuel pump and my engine runs great. Not seeing the point on changing something that is working. I have even taken it off and dumped it out from both sides into a clean jar and no real residue

Hope that doesn't include your engine oil & filter or air filter.
Filters and fluids are the cheapest things we will ever put into our Jeeps.
You don't see any residue, because it's trapped in the paper filter material. ;)

on another note.. this tank is as sharp as a freaking knife! i have cut myself everytime i have handled it..

one more question, it looks like the tank is coated.. just wondering if I should get some paint and spray the outside of the tank?
 
Sorry to say-Post'n pictures is way above my 'pay-grade'. :o
If the tank has an outside coating. The paint may not 'stick'. ;)

I used galvanized paint.

I just made a bracket to come off the front of the battery tray at the forward inboard corner. Then attached the filter to said bracket. It's just in front of this 'tray'.
This gives me plenty of room to change the filter's cartdridge, and is out of the way for other engine service.

I guess it would depend on the coating
If it's an e-coating that would typically be taken down
Some other coatings could be lightly sanding for adhesion.
