Hope that doesn't include your engine oil & filter or air filter.
Filters and fluids are the cheapest things we will ever put into our Jeeps.
You don't see any residue, because it's trapped in the paper filter material. ;)

Castrol oil every 2,500 miles first 200,000 miles with filter. Now every 1,000 miles or 6 months, which ever comes first. :chug: I think now because I'm feeling pretty lucky, went through a tornado yesterday at work, it actually went right over the building I was in, I'm going to live it up and put a new fuel filter on tomorrow:notworthy:

Actually I would like to think we were all looked over and it was a miracle that nobody in the whole surrounding area was not killed because it was pretty bad. I think it also had to do where I was also. Massive and strong building with 43 acre roof made during WW II , when men were men and we built things to last.
 
Glad you are all right. Lots of things will last .... Until they get a direct hit by a tornado. Not much can stand up to Ma Nature when she's lookin' To bring her wrath down on about anything and everything we know.
 
You are correct. Just an EF 3. If it would have been moving slower or an EF 4 or EF 5 it would have been a different story with complete destruction and major loss of life. The city of N.O. would be dealing with another major disaster. This was the strongest to ever strike this area
 
update, i am going to try to get new tank in the jeep this weekend. I am going to the store today to get about 6 feet of rubber fuel line so I can replace the various lines at the tank and going to the fuel pump etc. I went ahead and bought another factory fuel filter.

maybe yall can give me a couple pointers on the best way to get to the rubber lines in the rear driver's fender where the rollover valve and the liquid check valve are. those original lines need to be replaced. if I take the taillight off, will that, at least, give me a sight line to those things?

are those the same size as the other rubber lines? i.e., either 5/16 or 1/4? I dont want to fubar those fittings when taking the line off of them.. any ideas?

Use steel lines as much as possible.
Use the rubber to connect to the steel.
Double clamp the rubber to steel.

yes, i am only replacing the old rubber line between the hardlines and the tank etc. can i use the worm gear clamps for hoses?
 
I much prefer to constant tension of the OEM type spring clamps.
I even 'hunt' bone-yards to keep a supply on hand.
That said-I do use the worm gear clamps where I can easily ck'em.

thanks. what about the fuel line size for the liquid control valve and the rollover valve? and best way to get to those hoses?
 
They use the standard size with the exception of the green plastic looking line that runs to the vapor canister. It acts like a steel line. The lines between the two devices may be a different size, been awhile since I messed with mine. Easiest way to get to all of that is to disconnect it from the body, make you modifications and replace it. He's a diagram:

5/16" is used the most. There's also some 1/4" used from the fuel filter return etc.

alright, i think I have all the stuff I need to install the new tank this weekend. I am hoping to be able to drop the LCV and the rollover valve to replace the lines from the tank to those two items. I bought about 15 feet of 1/4" and 5/16" rubber fuel line to try to replace the soft lines where needed.

my plan right now is to do the following things (in order(ish))

- "rinse" out the new tank with some gas
- blow some air from the fuel pump (before the pump) backwards through the lines to flush out any gunk/bad fuel
- bench test sending unit (need to read up on that..)
- drop LCV / Rollover valve and replace hoses on those, reinstall in fender
- install hoses on sending unit in tank to prepare to lift tank into place.
- install tank
- install new filter with new rubber lines to return and carb
- "prime" the system by cranking over engine with coil wire removed
- check for leaks....
- address any issues..

see if this thing will run.. (without catching on fire that is)

previous owner said the carb is leaking out of the right side.. but not sure.. will report back my findings hopefully saturday.
 
started working on getting the new tank installed and ran into a snag..

found out the "output" of my LCV is broken. so, I need to track down a replacement for that. only hitch is that they arent made anymore.. I have to figure out how to replace that.

any ideas?

luckily, I found a replacement valve on Qtec.. isnt for my year CJ but looks like it will work. $16 not too bad. if it doesnt work i will figure something else out.

so, if it gets here in time.. i am going to try to fire this dude off this weekend! wish me luck.
 
ok. Q-tec valve was back ordered so I found this one

mine is shipping to me now.

the key is that they are listed as 84-86 models only but it looks exactly like the one on my '80. will report back when i get it.

hopefully it gets here tomorrow or saturday so I can try to finish the install of the tank and try to get the jeep cranked over.
 
Nice thing about those is when you lay your CJ over or on its lid and the fuel vent hoses don't leak any fuel.

not really, there is a separate rollover valve after this valve in the system.
