I bought an 85 CJ7 this year and it wouldn't pass California smog with a carburetor so i've pulled the engine and i'm rebuilding it.

Welcome aboard from Virginia - Lumy’s gonna be a good resource for you dealing with Cal smog stuff.....
 
In the past the issues passing smog on my '86 have been from a bad O2 sensor and cracked vacuum lines. Good luck with your rebuild.
