I'm finally starting the process of assembly for my 79 CJ7 . Everything is basically new. Have a fiberglass tub and the higher cost Painless wiring kit (built-in ground, etc).

We are trying to decide if we want to run the rear wires thru the inside of the tub (like factory) which would require adding the hole above the rear wheel well. Or, just attaching the harness along the frame and then add the hole to the tub floor beside the parking brake.

Anyone has done this either way please let me know. And maybe Pros / Cons for either way.

Thanks Guys.

Well mine is going to be different because I am installing the painless harness in a '66, so my frame is open. The guide said to route the rear wires inside the tub but I went out the same hole in the firewall as the engine section. I used heat shrink on the bundle. Then I routed it down the firewall and into the frame, I have one wire come out for the fuel gauge part way back and it comes through a hole that was there in the tub. That bundle will also be encased in a plastic wire wrap and secured to the frame.

I went down along the frame on mine,,Didn,t seem to warrant entering and exiting the Body.Seems easier to do it this way.My connections are all solder and shrink wrap covered in wire loom and haven,t had a problem. And I wanted to make mention I have a Fiberglass body and I ran a designated Ground wire with the bundle .

I would go on frame away from gas lines. Ifyou were to have a small electrical wiring fire on the frame it probably wont hurt to much.. catch that tub on fire and your out a jeep.

My 73 had it along the frame. I like mud and mud didn't like the wires on the frame. So I moved them inside. Much better. And sticks can't tear them off as easy.

The wires originate up by the dash and ran along the left side of tub behind the side of the rollbar. Then down about the left tail light.

All my wires with power are fused so I would not worry about a fire issue.

Well, I ended up attaching the rear wires to the frame. The Painless kit provided all wiring in the plastic cover and I also wraped all the way down in elec tape. Works for me.

By the way, anyone doing a full rebuild, pay the extra $100 for the Painless kit. I think it's about $650. Fully grounded kit and all harness sections are already install in the plastic covers. Especially if you are going with a fiberglass tub.

Thanks for the input guys.

Well to late now but with my glass tube I went inside the tube to protect it from the trail junk like sticks, mud, rocks ect.
