How about tractor? I have restored tractors also. Thats probably closer to a CJ than the Monte was. I had a 1942 John Deere "B" tractor my brother gave me. It was some what rare in that it had rear steel stamped one piece wheels. The two cylinder engine was also locked up. I had to pull the block with pistons and connecting rods still installed and use a 2 foot length of landscape timber and a 10 lb. sledge hammer and a whole can of panther **** to knock them out.

Moral of the story, it's very simplistic technology and also very stable technology. I guess I kind of look at a jeep the same way. A neighbor used an old willys jeep for farming before they bought an actual tractor believe it or not. But he.could have been full of it but I seriously doubt it.

I don't doubt it at all. Lot's of implements were designed to work behind a Jeep.

Ok. I'm going to check out this '80 CJ7 this week. So tell me what I need to know. It has the better Transfer Case right? Dana 300 ? It's a 4 speed manual with a small block chevy in it on an older resto. So drivetrain wise, what should it have? Were they all Renegades? Any submodels? Tell me more please!

I have a 1980 CJ7 . It works for me.

The SR4 4spd manual, the AMC Corp 20 rear axle... people consider those the some of weakest, most undesirable components in the history of CJs.

All I can say is that my SR4 and Corp 20 haven't failed me or the other three (previous) owners.

It could be anything! I say that because the engine was modified away from Jeep OEM. So we would need some pictures to tell you what it has. You could take some printouts from an internet search to figure this out when you look at it. Most transmissions have a specific style to them, axles can usually be identified from the differential cover, etc. Novak has a good tech section.

This guy is asking 8k. He will negotiate. Won't know until I'm there. So with a jeep that has a solid body, runs good everything checks out, what would be a fair offer? I know it's not a fair question without seeing it. But in general what's it really worth. Midwest area. I'll try to post some pics later.

"Worth" is highly subjective. $8k for someone making $160k / year is a lot different from someone making $35k/year.

The question I asked myself: "Are you willing to part with that much cash for that Jeep?" The answer was "yes" for me.

When I bought my CJ I asked a buddy and his brother if it was worth it.

The more affluent sibling said, "Great deal! Let's get to work!" His brother told me it was a rip-off and I should have waited.

The broke brother was wrong. I love my CJ and I don't miss the cash.

PS: Think of it as "what the local market will tolerate." Around here, a CJ buyer in Seattle will have a lot of competition from people making a six figure salary. I know a guy that spent $15k on a restored CJ. I know another guy that talked the owner into letting him haul it off the farm for free.

He spent a 400 hours at least making it what he wanted. Did he get a good deal? Mr. $15k doesn't think so. 400 hours to Mr. $15k is about $26,000 for Mr. $15k. 400 hours for Mr. Haul-it-away-for-free think's it's free.

Impossible question to answer until we can see many detailed pictures.
Look for wet spots on the undercarriage.........
Do you have anyone there that knows CJ's that can go with you?

Thanks for the input. It helps.

I know it's a loaded question to ask. But I wanted some view points anyway. One mans trash is anothers treasure. It boils down to how bad do I really want a Jeep? Pretty bad, but not bad enough I'll jump to quick. I've looked at a total of three jeeps. There just is not that many for sale at one time to create competition between sellers in these parts.

I have relatives in Phoenix. There is a decent selection right now down there. I have toyed with the thought of flying down on a vacation and driving one back. 18.5 hour drive though. That doesn't include if something broke down. But it's still an option.

I'll see where the guy with the '80 will go, and go from there. I have a tendancy now to pick things apart as I like things a certain way. It's almost OCD. But we'll see what it looks like. I've learned pics can hide a lot. Got to see it in person.

Going to look at an '83 tomorrow. Much more reasonable price and it looks pretty solid. It's just extremely dirty and weathered. Inline 6 engine, no top, runs good. Needs back seat fixed and cleaned up a little. It looks pretty intact and not hacked up. I just decide to pass on the '80 being it was 8k and the '83 is close to the same condition for about half of the price of the '80. So no brainer there. It just has to survive an hour and 45 min. drive.

Ok it worked.

Now. I settled on a Jeep today. So I'm officially a Jeep peep. I bought a 1979 CJ7 . I'm the 3rd owner with only the original owners daughter inheriting the Jeep in between. It is a true survivor. Uncut, complete to my knowledge. It's got a stock AMC 304 V8 and 3 speed manual. It even has stock AC? Or would that be aftermarket? It's a California Jeep so body is excellent. Got hard top and two soft doors with it. Interior is in good shape too. Seats are good also. Dash has a clock, tach and more knobs than I know what to do with.

Make sure the seller has the 'pink' slip and write down the vin# on the firewall to be sure it matches the 'pink'.

OK here goes. Jeep has a few things I've not seen on a Jeep. It has "V8" badges on the side just in front of the doors. It also has an "X" below the AMC badge on the back just above the license plate holder. Mean anything?
