Ok gents I'm a new member and a new jeep owner. I bought an 1980 CJ7 in another state. when I went to get plates for it they made me have law a enforcement officer do a vin check and fill out a affidavit. Well, when we check for the Vin # to see if it matched the title in hand, we noticed it didn't have a Vin on it. The body was replaced with a fiberglass body and the vin number was not transferred to the new body. No where on the jeep was there a vin#. Does anyone know how to apply for a new Vin number or what do you do if you bought a vehicle that has been restored and doesn't have on ?

That will happen. There will ( should) be a vin# over the passenger side rear wheel on top of the frame. The numbers are a pretty good size and be easy to find. Hopefully it's the right frame.

Not sure if its the same, since I have a '74, but I have a VIN # stamped into the frame over the right front wheel arch.

Just went through the same thing with my 83, as coldwater said, one location will be on the frame rail behind the pass rear tire on top of the frame, if it is there, it may not be a complete vin, but there should be enough there to see if it is a match, could also be above the gas tank on cross member, this ones harder to get to. Before you have it inspected find the vin on the frame yourself and make sure it matches the title you have. If it does match, find local law enforcement that will inspect it, they know what to look for. They fill out a portion of the affidavit you have, you then take it and get a reassigned vin number, basically they will give you a sticker to put on the body with the number thats on your title. The whole process is a pain, but worth it in the end. The whole thing cost me $2.00 and about two weeks time. In Texas when you finally go for the reassigned vin, you have to have the vehicle with you-trailered-not driven, they apply the vin tag.

If the number on the chassis doesnt match your title, this could be a big problem, doesnt matter what number is on the title, the chassis vin is what you go by. Dont take it to be inspected until you find your chassis vin, mismatched numbers are very bad, they can confiscate the whole vehicle on the spot.

Where are you located? Regs may be a little different where you are but very close. Hope this info helps.
