1986 jeep cj7 with a 258 4.2 bored 30 over. 4 inch suspension lift and 1 inch body lift. When completely done it will be camo wrapped and have bumpers,winch,33s or 35s,a double outlet header and performance carbeurator.
I have an 86 CJ7 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l amc AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l liter. I have had the motor rebuilt and have done away with all the vacume system and pollution :dung: but the problem is I am not getting fire. Does anyone know what it could be?

Please and Thankyou!

To start with check for 6 volts at the red wire on the coil connector when the ignition coil connector is at the "on" position. Sometimes those snap on coil connectors can go bad too.

Check the distributor shaft for side play. If there's any, You need to replace distributor. Check all conections as torkshead mentioned. If all that is ok then it might be the ignition module on the drivers side fender. The're known to give up without warning.

I have put a new coil, starter, ignition module and solenoid on it and I'm still not getting fire. I can't figure it out. Thanks for all the help and responses though.

You are kinda leaving us dry on info.. Theres really 4 reasons why a motor wont start

1) No spark
2) No fuel
3) Bad timing
4) To much or little air

#1 verify you are getting 6 volts to your coil with the ignition switch on. Also you should get full 12volts when cranking it. If your getting the proper voltage there then you need to check for spark. Theres fancy tools that you can buy but Im a big fan of phillips screw driver in a spark plug boot then get the exposed metal part of the screw driver close to a good ground part on the motor.. should see a spark jump across.

#2 Pulll your hose off the carb, stick it into a clear water bottle and crank the motor to look for fuel. There could be a chance that you have no prime in your fuel system causing it not to be pulled through the lines and into the carb

#3 if the jeep ran prior to you removing the pollution and comp stuff then you should be ok. If it didnt you need dobule check the Timing and Firing order. make sure the number 1 is at TDC on the compression stroke then pull your distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing.. thats numbe one cylinder.. doesnt matter if its pointing to the front back or side of the motor thats where you start. Put a line on the Distributor housing so when you put the cap back on you can line up number one with the line. Once your sure your back on top dead center replace all the spark plug wires in order.

#4 This is a hard one to track down with out the motor running. but make sure that all the vacuum ports that are not being used are capped with high quality plugs. Look for any place where vacuum may leak.

Now heres some question your gonna need to answer.

What carb are you running? Are you sure you performed the nuttter bypass correctly? HAve you tried dumping gas or starting fluid down the carb? Are the timing chain marks correct? If your using different then stock carb what are you using for an adapter for it? Choke? Electric, manual? Provide all the little things that you have had done so we can help diagnose it more.. It wont start really isnt a good way to get help.

Id start with trying to spray some starter fluid in it and see if it will at least stumble or make the attempt to start. its cheap, quick and easy. Ive had motor fire over with out a carb on the intake. If you shoot some ether down the throat of the carb and it stumbles then Id say you have a fuel issue.. if it does nothing id go with spark issue.

Good luck.

It has a weber 38/38 carb and we have sprayed gas in the carb but still got nothing. So ill have to look for leaks in the vacume and stuff today. The timing is set. Ill just do some more research. Thanks

If you sprayed gas down the carb and it does nothing then Id start looking at your timing, firing order and electrical. A vacuum leak will make it idle rough or run like poop.. should still start.

Ok thanks ill check it out.

I had this problem the other day, I have a 360 in my cj, car just died on me while diriving, no spark. Checked the coil, distributor, module and wiring everything seemed fine besides the pickup within the distributor looked a little worn, replaced that still nothing. Come to find out it was simply a 1 dolllar fuse in the fuse box that went bad. I feel like an idiot, shouldve checked there first. :D

Actually now that I think of it my fuel gauge also stopped working, swapped out the fuse, fired right up
