Question.:

Is it possible to "reverse lookup" a vin? The BMV is no help. I have tried www sites with the VIN and since its a 78, nothing comes up there either. I dont know anyone at the BMV. ;)

I sold a 78 CJ7 in the 90's and i want it back :). I have the VIN and would LOVE to find the current owner to make an offer.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Steve

Possibly a Private Detective might have access to the data bases you would need.

you are probably aware that your '78 might no exist any longer, as in crushed, parted out, gone from the Vin. lists. When I registered my '75 it had so long since it was registered they had to look up the VIN in a list of purged VIN numbers.

The Papa John guy wanted the Camaro back that he sold to buy his first pizza oven. He offered $1,000,000 for it. I think he got it back and used it in a commercial but that’s a little steep for most of us. When there is a recall the manufacture uses the state DMVs to find out who owns the suspect vehicle but that’s official business so to speak. You might try your DMV. Depends upon if registration is “public knowledge” or not. If public there may be a way.

What Lumpy said would get it done. Finding a cop that's willing to risk his career doing it is another story :D. Violates all kinds of laws, policies, morals and ethics.

:agree: The cop might as well :biggun: himself, given the penalties he'd face. Many years ago it would not have been a problem, unless you were a scanner listener. My Partner and I ran the license plate number on this girl that was bouncing all over the parking lot.;) Turns out her father had a scanner and wanted to know what was going on! We told the dispatcher it was a car like one we were looking for.:laugh: And yes the statue of limitations has run out on that story, so I can tell it. That's pretty funny! Thank God we have the ability to run licenses and tags through the computer now. Keeps the scanner jockeys guessing. Still calling out the stop on the two way in case the plates and vehicles don't match and we end up getting into something serious, they'll know the description and location we're at. But now we have the ability to run a complete stop on the computer without a radio if needed.......That is, until the server crashes, which happens more than I'd like to think about.
