When I got my jeep the odometer was not working. Speedo works fine ,just off because of tires. Is there a fix for odometer or can you buy one.
Thanks

I would first try to find a speedo repair shop, if they still exist. Otherwise they can be purchased from one of the big box aftermarket outfits like 4WDH,4WPW,Quadratec, Morris, and then there are junkyards which are specific to 4wds.

They are fairly easy to work on. My Jeep had a junk yard speedometer and the title clearly says the mileage is unknown. So while in the speedometer to remove the dirt and weeds and mostly dust that covered the inside I removed the odometer and reset it to "0" miles. Not to cheat, but to show how many miles since the major work done this past year. The entire mechanism is a surprisingly simple device. The only hard part is replacing the retaining spring that holds the whole thing together, even that was just a fiddly thing to deal with.

So the odometer can be taken out and cleaned and that may fix it. AS I said speedometer works fine just the odometer doesn't.

You might get some help by looking at John Strenks New gauge page.

That seems to talk mostly about the electrical part of gauge. Not sure how odometer works. Does it work with the speedo cable? I hate to buy a new speedometer just for the odometer?

If it's a stock odometer, it is strictly mechanical. Simple plastic gears. Now how a speedometer works is mystery to me. Magnets and friction and magic is involved.

The odometer and speedo both work off the Transfer Case . The cable turns 2 worm gears to move the odometer. The speedo is spring loaded. Could just need a cleaning or a stripped gear.

The last speedo I rebuild the odometer and needle were broke but the speedo worked. I had an extra mechanical unit so I just replaced it.

This is an earlier model with metal worm gears.
