Original steering wheel

Original steering wheel
Hi Sky;

Glad to see there is a lady in the house. Welcome aboard!
Yes and I got your joke about Cali. (LOL)
Like I said before go to the Grant web site and look at there wheels and kits for horns. At least you'll see what you need or what you can get if you decided to replace the one you have. Interesting enough that wheel off road might work well because sometimes your legs / knees get banged up by the wheel going over rough stuff. Just a thought.

Off Road? You mean like in the mud!

I'm trying to fix it- not tear it up. Although I do love mudding. Another jeeper in town is trying to get me to take it to Turkey Bay, an trail place here. I just don't know if I can abuse my jeep like that- yet.

It's the technical stuff that makes me say the hell with it. If I can't look at it and figure it out- then I'm in trouble. But I will take a stab at it, first chance I get.

you can head of to a pull it your self yard
find an older cherokee , pull that steering wheel ( with the wires)
and it will have the jeep emblem

with the turn signal cancelling in the turn that means ( more than likely ) the PO just swapped the wheel only
but you still have to tear in to the column to see if the PO broke it
Do you start with a key or button?

and I see stuff like that too in Atlanta
like a Hello Kitty SS impala......and a Mary Kay Hummer H2

I am guessing that the adapter can be found under the wheel you have now.

to put an original wheel on it you will need a steering wheel puller to remove the adapter before you can put a stock wheel on. I think when you put the wheel back on you just got it lined up on the wrong holes. Pull it off and turn it 90 deg and bolt it back up.:D

to replace the wheel you have now you can buy a different Grant wheel with the horn kit, the only hard part of that is wiring the horn. You obviously have the horn, just not the switch.

I can't wait to see how this all turns out.

Cerrajerro- are you saying the wheels on a cherokee would be the same original wheel for my cj? Cause there are NO older junk jeeps anywhere around here. What year would I be looking for?

IO-
Everytime I go into Orielly's (which is almost daily now) I see the all black grant one that I really do like, then I start to question what I need and say the heck with it again...so I am still driving with it sideways :D. Because I refuse to take it off only to put it back on again when I hate it AND it will probably take a few tries to get it straight. So I will drive it as is.

Sure is a lot of popcorn eating on my posts.....makes me think you guys have no faith in me :p.

Hey Hey,
I have all the confidence in the World! Carry On!

Grant Steering Wheels

Thanks Tarry! I'm glad someone's in my corner here.

IO..........well, at least you pulled out the popcorn instead of the bacon. :D

Hi Sky,

Just for exercise , here's a picture of the new Grant wheel I'm sticking in my CJ. That's a 15" Grant Leather wrapped wheel which is about the same size as the stock Jeep Wheel. Looking at your pictures I think you have a grant adapter on there already. This wheel is a 5 hole mount. I have used this wheel before on another vehicle and I like the grip, size and its very comfortable. Its model #1770 Signature series.
And don't look at the mess in the old CJ, she'll get embarrassed!
Good Luck!
:)

I like that black grant one too! I think that's close to the one I saw in the store.

The last pic on the right is as far as I took off to change the blinker lever- I guess I have to have a specific tool to go further.

So this is all that holds my steering wheel on- they seem to be very short screws for such an important item

(actually 5 of these but still.....)

That's it 5 little screws, Yes as I mentioned before that is a Grant adapter, so at least you now know. That particular one is for the 5 bolt steering wheels. So if you buy aftermarket that is what your looking for. I did not see any horn wire sticking up.
Normally there is a spring loaded stud sticking up through that hole in the bottom adapter. The end of the stud is brass and your horn wire is attached to that as it comes up the column. As you go up towards the wheel there is a brass flat ring that floats under that 5 screw adapter. That brass ring is in constant contact with that spring loaded stud. There is a wire attached to the brass ring that goes up to your horn button which you don't have. push the button and Walla you blow your horn.........if ya had those parts..................All of the horn stuff comes with a new wheel if you buy one except that spring loaded stud which is part of your column and should be in there unless someone cut it out?????????

That little funny shaped ring that has a wire connector is your horn ring........If you change steering wheels that stuff will probably not work.............good news is the new wheel will have its own. I looked at those other pictures again and that spring loaded stud may be there but your pictures are a little unclear at this end.

the part is DORMAN 83230
here is the cancel cam

and you will have to dig deeper into the column and a GM compression ring tool is needed ( well it makes it alot easier)

you have to pull of the gear looking plate ( the red arrow is pointing to it on your column)

question....on your column pic below..... the threads that are circled in blue....are they in good shape?
Just in case you go back to OEM then those threads will be important

I'm really surprised there was no popcorn after your posts guys.....:D

Tarry and Cerrajero-
I REALLY appreciate the time you took to explain that.

There are no wires anywhere that I have found. So- I have decided....screw the horn, I'll just run over it if it doesn't move.

If I buy the black grant one off the shelf- can I just put it on the column as is? Or is there something else I need.

I'm thinking maybe I'll just try to put it on in the parking lot-that way if I need another part, I will have access to it. Really ticks me off to go home and realize I needed another part half way into the situation.

Hi Sky,

You should be good to go, you have a five bolt pattern adapter on there now so just buy a five bolt pattern steering wheel. The plastic trim and that black bell or plate shaped cover will go right on in the same order. The new wheel will come with a horn button , just hang onto that stuff until you have time to find that brass tipped button.
That horn wire may be tucked down in that column. Look for a 3/16-1/4" round plastic Item with a brass tip on it, again the brass tip may be all that's exposed. Like I said it could be pushed down in the column.
Good Luck..............
