Paint blues

I plan to do a complete rebuild on my 81 CJ5 . It has the rust under the roll cage other wise just has some surface rust. I was planning on soda blasting the tub and parts. This were I get fuzzy. I only want to paint once. Hate rust showing up latter. What is the best way to prep for paint to combat rust. Which paint and primer holds up? What really works?

I like epoxy primer the best, holds up well. I use the dp primer from ppg.Then por where stone chips can occur. I even put por inside fenders and body.

Soda blasting won't clean up the rust.

What ever primer you use, make sure you use proper prep for the primer you use if soda blasted.

On bare metal best to etch and chromate. Sounds hard, but just tell the guy atPPG what you are doing. They have an etch you wipe on and let dry. POR sells a prep as well. They make good stuf, but you gotta prep well omit will peel.

I like the two part epoxies. Tough stuff and they know they can charge outrageous prices. Oh well

A sand blaster that knows how to clean sheet metal using lower pressures and low nozzle angles are out there, but make sure to ask if they have done a body before. You don't want to be part of their learning curve. ..

If you spray Epoxy yourself be sure to use a respirator rated for the job. Not to be confused with a bandanna or a dixie cup with a rubber band on it. breathing Epoxy can cancel your ticket permanently with very little effort on your part. Once you breath it in it never comes out.

The same advice goes for any and all paint from Rustolium to PPG but most of them take a lot longer to kill you.

From what I have heard, some professional painters have had a problem with corrosion bleeding under the paint after soda blasting.

When ever you strip anything down to bare metal you need to spray it with a good metal etching primer.

Yes etching primer for sure. Or would a person por then top coat with a primer after the scuff then paint>

unless you are treating rust just a good metal etching primer is all you need.
