what vehicles, and I mean any vehicle has a front axle with a passenger side differential housing?? Does anyone know of a company that sells a reverse cut ring and pinion for a ford 9"?? I am looking for good candidates for the axles on my next project. a pair of 9" fords would be incredible but I have yet to find a 9" front axle. Currie makes a housing for one but do not sell a R&P that is reverse cut so it is like running the axle in reverse when ever it is engaged. also need to find 35 spline axles that can be shortened and re splined. Pretty much whatever it is will need to be shortened and reassembled. these will more than likely be under a SBC and run at least 38 " rubber.

:)

Currie makes a Ford 9" High Pinion. Same case as a 9" but uses an 8.8 ring gear...........or True Hi-9 TrueHi9 - Home Page also makes one also using the 9 Ring gear.........both can be had with 35 splines as I have one. As far as a housing for the Passenger side , probably not going to happen in a factory housing as most send the front drive shaft forward on the drivers side, in which case you have someone build a Right side drop............

What suspension are you using?

If it's leaf sprung I doubt that you can get near the offset you need to the pinion from the Transfer Case on either side without building a custom housing and perhaps out-boarding your springs.........been there done that.

A fellow club member has a '79 CJ5 with those custom built Currie high pinion 9" axles and it allows a 35" tire and a 350/700r4 with atlas Transfer Case to fit quite well. It is also leaf sprung. Money can buy anything.

Not a ford 9" but both (older) chevy and dodge had pass. side dana 60's.(not high pinion)
Moser can make any size axle you want.

I was kind of hoping not to do it but I may very well have to cannibalize My old J-10, for a Dana 44 front axle and maybe even the AMC20 (solid factory axles) in the rear. Not sure about the suspension just yet. Can anyone think of a reason it would be a good thing to have the front axle narrower than the rear , by as much as 7"????

Making it narrower in the front would not be a good Idea........Currently all early Jeeps had axles / tread width that are always wider in the front, some as much as 3 inches.......but in most cases one inch wider does the trick..........Why do that? So your rear axle has the ability to turn near inside the radius of the front to get around a turn.........pretty common on most cars and trucks.

Although lately manufactures through advanced steering geometry have pretty much used equal widths now......

The front axle on the Willys is narrower than the rear by 7", as far as I can see the j-10 axles are the same or at least very close to the same. If I use the j-10 axles I will leave them the way they are.

I went to the grave yard today looking for an sm465 Transmission , after slogging (not part of my usual vocabulary) through ankle deep mud for half an hour I found the promised truck but it was an automatic. I gave the guy at the counter the stink eye, changed boots , drove home and took a nap. ankle deep mud is a lot of work. Lots of snow, ice and rain in the last couple of weeks. I wish it would continue for a couple more weeks.

there is still some thought to be put into axles and transfer cases. I would like a muncie sm45 4 speed which came stock with an np 205 TC which is on the pass side but if the tranny/TC can not be found and an adapter is required the decision will be tilted toward the np 208 which will be drivers side and come closer to matching the j-10 Dana 44 front axle.

the ford 9" is a consideration because I have always thought that the 3rd member design was superior to most others. I think I can shorten or lengthen just about anything to what I want but I need something to start with and right now I already have the j-10 axles and they are not bad designs.

you ever notice how thinking about the build is as much fun as the actual build?

If you are going to shorten the front axel anyway a Dana 44 out of a 78 or 79 bronco could be used, they have a high pinion.
