Planning the 6th Annual Colorado Jeep-CJ Trail Ride

Hi Mike -

Would you put it in the front or the rear? My CJ5 has the AMC "Posi-Lock" or whatever they call their Limited slip in the rear now but it builds up pressure on the discs and realeases with a real "bang" ever so often. I've thought about having it rebuilt but had about decided to just change it out.

I would definitely put it in the rear axle. It seems that most people with one locker have it in the rear axle because in most cases (unless you're a genuine rockclimber) the weight of the engine up front serves enough of the purpose.

If most of your wheeling is similar to what's being done every year out in the San Juan's I would feel very comfortable with a locker only in the rear axle.

I don't want to send this thread off topic but I'll briefly say you can't use a lunch box locker with a trac-loc rear 20. You have options Bill, I'd suggest starting a new thread in the tech section. Look forward to seeing you this summer.

Those of you staying in Ouray, that's only 23 miles from Silverton but it takes about 45 minutes to drive because of the winding mountain highway 550. Red Mountain Motel, Cabins, RV Park still has rooms but they are hard to get a hold of. Leave a message and they'll get back to you.
We'll have breakfast someplace like the Brown Bear Cafe

I've been thinking about the trails we could go on this year. With Silverton as our base there are lots of trails we have not gone on on the other trail rides. One that comes to mind is Kendal Mountain. This mountain is right next to Silverton. This is an awesome trail that takes you almost to the peak of the mountain.

You get a great view of Silverton down below

The only problem with this trail is it pretty much dead ends near the peak. It's not a good trail to bring a group on because it's hard to get the group turned around.

Then at lower elevations there's another trail that goes south of Kendal Mountain. After riding a rough and rocky 4x4 trail you come across this bus.

I don't know how long that bus has been there but there's no way to get such a bus back there today. I think the miners had the road in much better shape in the '50s. We could get a group on this trail.
Actually if our group gets to be bigger than about 10 jeeps I would rather split up. I remember jeeping in the mountains when there was a FJ Cruiser convention. They split up in groups of 10 and that was still a hassle getting around them.

When I moved to Durango and got my jeep I bought a 4x4 map to help find trails. The map was marked with the difficulty of the trails. The map showed a trail to Clear Lake near Silverton and the trail was marked as a "technical 4x4" trail. I thought "wow I've got to try that trail." It was the only trail marked as such. I took my jeep up that trail and it was no worse than any of the other trails.
On the 2nd Annual Jeep-CJ trail ride we went on this trail up to Clear lake.



I think we will be going on this trail this year.

If I remember right, Clear Lake has some decent switchbacks. Not dangerous if I recall thanks to the trees but fun to traverse.

This year we'll be going on some trails we've never gone on during the previous 5 years.
We will be going up Picayune Gulch, Placer Gulch and American Basin. Those are 3 locations we've never been to.

Here's the itinerary I'm thinking of:

Sunday Aug. 14th - Travel Day. No trail rides this day but we plan on meeting at Handlebar's restaurant for dinner and drinks. We'll be discussing the plans for the trail ride.

Monday Aug. 15th. - Animas Forks Ghost Town then to Engineer Pass and out Highway 550. We've been on Engineer Pass trail before but we've always gone the other direction.

Tuesday Aug. 16th. - Clear Lake, Brooklyn Trail and US Basin

Wednesday Aug. 17th. - Black Bear Pass then coming back over Imogene pass to Ouray. Then we'll take highway 550 back to Silverton.

Thursday Aug. 18th. - Picayune Gulch, Placer Gulch, Cinnamon Pass and American Basin.

Friday Aug. 19th - No plans. We never plan out the last day until the participants discuss what they would like to do. We may be doing Poughkeepsie Gulch this day but only if everyone is up to it. This would be the only trail that you need lockers. Well, either lockers or you have to be Posi. He's the only one I've ever heard of that has made it up The Wall with open differentials. If no one wants to try Poughkeepsie Gulch we can try something more mild, more scenic or whatever.

Saturday Aug. 20th - Travel day. Everyone's heading back home. No trail rides scheduled for this day.
