Planning the 7th Annual Jeep-CJ Trail Ride
The running tally is now 18 Jeeps and 31
I hope everyone comes.

However, I count 9 Jeeps, Bobby and Blacky would make 10 if they weren't counted already.
Everyone else has a 20% or higher chance of not showing according to the poll.

Dave is the Event Coordinator/Trail Leader so whatever he says goes. I'll just offer some of my thoughts.

We're dealing with the unknown, we have no idea how many Jeeps will be on the trail until 1 or 2 weeks out from the event. Fairly certain we will have at least 9-10 Jeeps anything more is a guess.

A good plan would be to set up a Blue and Green trail in advance, (blue being a bit more challenging then green). This way the trails are setup and ready to use one, or both, if needed.

I don't believe we will need more then 2 groups, it could be we only need one. There are some trails we could take one group on matter how many we have in it, some we can't. There should be at least one, maybe two days we can wheel together no matter the size.

If we need to pick a group this can be done a week out or the day before the event over a beer. If there needs to be two groups the first stage would be to have the members request the blue or green trail asap. If it doesn't pan out evenly on it's own Dave will split the group.

If the group is split we will need 2 trail leaders and 2 gunners. Again, lets not be too concern will numbers at this stage, lets focus on a blue and green trail course ready to go if need be.

I'm still planning on coming, just hope to be able to get the jeep all dialed in by then. Gotta chase downing a cooling problem now, get a 32 inch spare and some other little parts. I'll be solo and camping (tent) at the amphitheater campground. looking forward to meeting up with all of you.

I sure hope you make it. Work on making your jeep reliable. Spend your time on the cooling problem. Put your spare on low priority. If you find a spare, great. But if you don't and then have a flat, we'll keep you running. Your replacement may not match your other tires but I'm sure a flat won't disrupt our fun. We're all driving Jeeps over 30 years old. Each year we have issues that never stop us. We all come together to get the wounded jeep back on the trail.

Some good ideas here. Thanks Chuck. :notworthy: This weekend I've been riding my cycle and thinking about this jeep trip. I thought I had a plan worth posting but after reading your post I've altered my plan. I will post what I think once I collect my thoughts.

Dave I've sent you a PM.

The poll results are not accurate because it does not reflect people that have changed their minds. Everyone that has voted that they "will be there" is still planning on coming but everyone that said they were 80% sure is now saying they are much more confident they'll make it.
And DJohnbb62 has not voted but he has told me he'll be there.
Of course people may back out but then again more may sign up.
As of today we have 18 Jeeps and 31 people planning on attending.

That's good news!

Hey Bass...if just one of these 31 people turned out to be a drummer...we'd have us a band!

Uh, I'm a drummer.

What? right under my nose! Now all we have to do is find a bar with a band some where in sleepy Ouray and hi-jack the stage for a few numbers!

Sounds like fun! Maybe I should add a 120 volt generator to the to do list on the Jeep!

I just cast my vote for 80% sure. I have a trip to Ouray with some friends planned for August 6-12th, and I hope to be able to stay another week and hang out with you guys till at least Wednesday or Thursday. Of course, this assumes that I can get my jeep put back together by then, this is what it looks like right now.

Make or extend your reservations soon. You can cancel them if something comes up. The motels in that little town fill up fast.
I hope to meet you in August.

The bodyless Jeep allows for more efficient heat dissipation. As one who knows, this can be helpful with vapor lock at altitude. Additionally, scrapes and so forth are all problems for others... Lastly, with the inevitable wrenching, EVERYTHING is easier to get to.

But to each their own...

All the love for a body-less jeep goes away at the first puddle.

As our trail ride grows in membership it's important to keep things organized.

Communication: If you are attending PM me to exchange phone numbers. Call me as you arrive in Ouray. Cell phones are useless when we leave town. Once we are on the trail we'll use CB radios to communicate. Although they are recommended they are not mandatory. If you do not have a CB stay in the middle of the pack. The lead and the tail end must have a CB. People in the middle should repeat messages so they are heard.
We use CB channel 16. I like to make this know before any trail ride. One year we headed out and became separated because I didn't inform everyone of the CB channel. One member didn't see me pull over and he drove all the way to Silverton looking for me. I didn't meet up with him until the end of the day at Ouray. It's also good to know where the trail head is in case you get separated.

A typical day of trail rides: We eat breakfast at 8 am. Some motels have some sort of breakfast otherwise join us at a restaurant to be decided the night before.
We leave town at 9 am. Make sure your tank is already filled the night before.

Every day seems to be sunny and warm in town. As we climb into the mountains it gets cool. Bring layers and a rain jacket.
We eat lunch on the trail. It's nice to bring a small cooler to carry a sandwich and water. If you don't have a small cooler several members often have a cooler larger than necessary. They are always willing to keep your lunch fresh.
Even though every morning seems to be sunny it always seems to rain most afternoons in late summer in the mountains. This is why we like to leave on the trail ride early.

When we get back to town, everyone wants to unwind but please refuel before nightfall. This helps to make sure we are all ready to leave at the same time in the morning. ;)

Great post there Dave. I would add that if breakfast can be managed earlier either via your hotel's breakfast or other means, all the better. Heading out of town at 8 even can potentially change the whole day when it comes to weather.

True. I am an early riser. I get up by 5:30 even on days I don't work. But I have given up on expecting a whole group to be ready before 9 am. We'll see if we can get a separate group of early risers to head out before the main group but I won't hold my breath.
