Its a very rough old machine and is scary to drive but it gets better each time I work on it.
This weekend I removed the Transmission /Transfer Case from my old 1975 CJ5 . Then I took it down to the car wash to wash off all the mud and debris. After I got it sprayed off, I noticed two orange plastic plugs installed above the range selector rods on the Transfer Case . See attached pic... is this normal?

Thanks...

I have seen several different kinds of plugs in that location. Mine are aluminum, others in pictures I've seen were various colors of plastic. They really don't do much more than keep dirt from getting in the guts of the shift rod area.

As Hedgehog said those plastic plugs are normal.

The purpose of the holes is for assembly. They put a spring and ball in there under the shift rails. This ball presses on dentents in the shift rails. When you rebuild the Transfer Case hold your hand over those holes when you remove the shift rails so you don't loose the balls or springs.

Most 30 year old jeeps are missing those plastic plugs. It's really not an issue.

Thanks all...guess they been there for 39 years so I'm not going to touch them.

Got the identical colored ones in my 76 CJ5 :
