Please give me a little help here

I am ready to assemble the heads on my freshly machined 360. I have been searching for weeks for some basic instructions. The thing is most of the info I find says to install head gaskets dry. I will be installing Fel Pro gaskets and the instructions tell me to apply sealant to the metal side contacting the block. However I cannot find any sealant recommended for head gaskets or gasoline. Any Comments would be appreciated. Thanx

Depends on the Gasket type.........Some copper gaskets yes but I personally have not seen a modern Fel-Pro Head gasket like the "Perma Torque" that requires any sealant.

Check with your supplier or better yet call the Fel-Pro tech line.........Don't guess!

One thing for sure is they do call out the need to have flat mating surfaces between the block and head........ This can be checked if you have a high precision straight edge, if not the block and head surfaces must be checked for flatness by a professional.
Along with that all of the head bolt holes in the block should be cleaned and a bottom tap run in each to full depth to clean the threads of any rust or old gasket material...... Dirty threads will give result in torque reading errors.... any through bolts that go into water jackets should also be sealed at the base with an anaerobic type sealer.

I have always thought of "gasket sealer" as a means of holding the gasket in place during assembly.

I recommend two bolts. same size and thread as the head bolts, about 1" longer. use these to align the head on the block. you won't need to be sliding things around to line up the bolt holes and the gasket stays in place.I am assuming the machine shop disappeared the dowel pins.
