POR-15 questions

I just got my rear axle re-geared. As part of the process the guy "cleaned up" the axle and stripped off the coat of paint the PO put on it and it has immediately started picking up surface rust.

If I was to treat it with POR-15, how big a deal is it to paint over bolts, etc. with the product? I don't really want to take the AMC20 cover off since it actually isn't leaking for once... will I be okay just putting some tape over the brake bleeder screws, etc?

Is there a better product to use? Zerorust or something else?

You can tape over them, sure, but they wont be protected... the POR is a great product and it WILL form a tough shell, but you can break the bolts loose after painting... you MAY suffer some collateral damage (such as pulling SOME paint off around the bolt heads) but you'll be fine...

If your going to POR-15 then do it right and take the bolts out now. It can peel when you do end up removing the bolts in the future.

The stuff is super but don't give it a place to start peeling.

Just about anything that you use will rub off once you start dragging it over things when you 4 wheel. That being said, I have used POR15 and it is a good product. However, I have also used Eastwood's Ceramic Engine paint. I like it better. It gives a very hard smooth finish, and comes in a bunch of colors to include black. If you are going to use POR15, I would highly recommend that you top coat it before it cures. I used regular Rustoleum as it is available everywhere and will make for easy touchups.
