Ok so i just purchased my CJ5 today its a 1977 with AMC 304 and im very excited about it but here is the problem. Ok guy told me as i purchased it that the battery was weak, so after getting it home which i had to trailer it . I started it up and ran it around the yard a few times, and turned it off. After a few minutes i tried to restart with no luck was barely turning over. So firsts things first i went ahead and got a new battery. Installed and again ran it around the yard and let it sit so i could admire my new purchase. Moved it to the garage and turned it off. Decided i should go ahead and try to restart it again just to make sure and woe and behold it would barely turn over. Any suggestions?

Could be the starter I guess. I know it's a long shot but if the timing is off it could cause hard starting. Did it start easily with the fresh batt.

Yeah, When i was buying it, it started in just a few turns, and after i replaced the battery it started up with no issues. Then fun begins in the morning. Im going to go thru all the wiring and a Co worker of mine said that alot of time the bushings in the Starter start giving way and it would lay down on the armature and could be grounding out so im going to look into that as well. and thanks for the reply.

If the starter doesn't fix it check for an electrical draw that is draining the battery.

Ill be looking this thing over pretty good in the morning and ill let ya know what i find out thanks for the info on the timing makes pretty good since really.

Check your battery leads.
Where does the ground(GND)battery lead go?
Best to have it mounted to the top bolt of the starter.
Have the battery load tested for AMPS and volts.

Starters are not expensive so if it needs to be replaced...
What I do nowadays is go to my local rebuilder and pick one up there. Usually higher quality and the price is compareable.
I would also check to see if there is a gear reduction starter that will work. I run those on my V8s and love them. They last forever and crank it over pretty fast.

Hey guys thanks for all the info. I pulled the starter and had it tested. It's bad so going to replace it and they are cheap enough. I will let you know how it goes after I install it. Plus some ugly wiring I'm working on as well. And I'm pretty sure the fella I got it from forgot what oil is, so doing that as well

its nice when things are cheap AND easy.

Your right. So replaced starter and it's working awesome. Funny enough had to go old school and punch a screwdriver thru oil filter but it finally gave way lol. And again thanks guys
