Power steering box ?

Power steering box ?
just a little trick to make install easier, thread the new hoses in before you bolt the box to the frame. you can tighten them after it is mounted but those fittings are a PITA off and on.:D

Got the box pulled off tonight... PIA! Actually wasn't to bad except the hose they came loose ok but the nuts where stuck to the tubing and could not get them to turn with out the tubing spinning. Ended up twisting them off , guess she will have new hoses also.
The frame and old bracket are actually in great shape, I think I am still going to order a new hd mount.
The biggest reason I ordered the new borgeson shaft was to get rid of that hokie joint at the steering box. I also think I got a good deal on it, ordered from Amazon and got it for 192.11 with free shipping.
Now to get it shipped out , mr.lee said he was about 7 day turn around right now.
Time for a :chug:

Sounds like a good plan. I have also been reading about inline power steering fluid filters, anybody run them? Do you think they are good to use? They are not that pricey just didn't know if they are really needed.

West Texas off road also specializes in p.s. boxes. You can send them a box to be rebuilt also. They have quality rebuild kits and are helpful. I had a sloppy leaking box. I did some research, ordered a kit from from them and after calling them a couple times with some questions I got it done.

Napa sells rebuild kits as well.:D

Well my new power steering hose showed up on the doorstep today, only problem is they came with no o ring. I think they are the right hose just like they don't come with the o ring. Anyone know the correct size o ring I need? Can't believe they come with out. Thanks

Ok... I'm starting to think when it seems easy it goes south in a hurry. I ordered the hoses from jcwhitney and of coarse they shipped separate . On Tuesday I got the return hose which came with out the o ring but not a big deal I got one at the local parts store.
Then today I got the pressure side hose and it is no where close to the one that came off the jeep. The box side has the o ring fitting like it supposed to but the pump side is also o ring style and the pump on my jeep and old hose has flare at the pump end? The new hose tubing is also bent different on the pump end?Any one have any Ideas? Attached are photos of pump and old hose.

something strange here. the 81 should have o rings both ends on pressure hose. will the male flair come out of the pump? could someone have gotten creative with it??

I got my hoses from Oreilly s auto parts, right the first time. My past experience with JCW is to be amazed you didn't get brake pads for a motorcycle. they never got an order right for me.:D

Well that's what I am thinking.. Maybe not the 81 power steering pump? I have been all over the parts store trying to find a hose that is flare on pump end and o ring on box end with no luck, but the one that was on it ( that I ruined when I took the box off) was that way. So I am thinking I am either down to getting a custom hose put together or replacing the pump with a rebuild one from an 81 cj.Which if I do the later will it bolt right up to my existing brackets, will the existing pulley work on the pump? any input would be great

Go down to your local junkyard and pull the correct fitting off the back of a donor power steering pump. I had the same problem recently (except that I needed the earlier flare fitting) and just found the correct one to swap. Really easy, millions of 80s era cars and trucks used O-ring style hoses on that same pump. I have my old one here in the toolbox just in case I need it in the future. Really easy.

Thanks bigt... I pulled the one out of mine and got one coming. Knowing is half the battle!

Cool, glad it helped. :)

Talked to Tom at Lee power steering today. They got my box tore apart manga fluxes and everything looks good. It had a 20-1 ratio and he recommended I go with a 16-1 variable ratio to 13-1. He will put it together tomorrow and be headed back to Iowa on Wednesday. Then I will have all the parts.... New hoses, new borgeson steering shaft, new rugged ridge HD mount and cleaned up the steering box brace and repainted it. Can't wait to get it back together and try it out. Now if it would just warm up a little so I want to get it out of the garage. This -3 temps is a bunch of :dung:

:)Sounds good looks like the process is moving forward, let us know how you like it.

Well I got my steering gear back from lee today and jumped right in to putting it all back together. It went pretty smooth installed a new rugged ridge hd mount, new power steering hoses, new borgeson shaft and the new gear box. The only thing that seems odd and I'm not sure but I think the rugged ridge mount actually changed the angle of the steering box because when I went to put the original Gear box brace back on the end that bolts to the cross member does not line up, it is about a half inch off. So it seems like the gear box is tweeked so that the back (input shaft) is shifted towards the frame side a slight bit more than with the stock mount. Anyone else ever run into this? I don't think it will matter everything seems to work fine and I am not sure that I even need the old brace as heavy duty as this mount is.
Funny thing is I went to start it to bleed the power steering system and now the fuel pump is spewing fuel out of a hole on the right side. So I guess now I need to put a new fuel pump on. I here are some pics of the steering upgrades.
This one is the rebuilt steering gear. It is now a 16-1 variable 13-1 rebuilt by lee power steering.

im going to be looking at mine..apparently p.o used the PS out of an old AMC car..so the only issue he had was he had to weld the pitman arm i believe...i had a quick look at the bracket holding it and it looked really strong..maybe it already has a H.D mount i dunno

You should be able to tell, the stock mount is very light weight , made out of stamped steel and it is two piece. If you want when I get home tonight I can post a pic of the factory mount.
